Fishburn in second, No. 39 Cougars tied for fourth on day two of NCAA Regional

NORMAN, Austin – Patrick Fishburn moved into second place individually firing a low of 66, while the No. 39 Cougars are tied for fourth place with one day left at the NCAA Norman Regionals.

“We had a great day today by the team to get us back in the game,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “Patrick really stepped it up and Rhett Rasmussen was so impressive. The NCAA Regionals are always a shootout and tomorrow will be one of those. I am proud of the way the men handled the lightning delay. We need another great day tomorrow to advance and are looking forward to the challenge.”

Led by Fishburn’s six-under-par second round score, BYU carded a team total of 278 (-10) on the second day of the Norman Regionals, moving up five spots from Monday's round one. With a 36-hole total of 573 (-2), the Cougars are tied for fourth place with No. 10 Auburn. BYU is only two strokes behind No. 27 North Florida 571 (-5) and five strokes behind West Coast Conference foe No. 33 Pepperdine 569 (-7). No. 3 Oklahoma continues to lead with a team total score of 567 (-9). The top six teams will advance to the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Fishburn carded one of the lowest scores of the day at 66 (-6). The senior started out strong, birdying five holes on the back nine, including four back-to-back holes. Fishburn birdied three more holes in the front nine to finish with a 36-hole score of 137 (-7) . Ending the day in second, the Utah native is only one stroke behind the leader, Oklahoma’s Blaine Hale.

Rhett Rasmussen also shot under par on the second day to finish tied for 15th. Rasmussen fired a 68 (-4) in the second round, birdying a total of five holes. The sophomore has a 36-hole total of 143 (-1).

Peter Kuest was steady all day as well and is tied for 21st at par. Kuest eagled the par-4 third hole and birdied back-to-back holes, 5 and 6, to finish with a second round score of 70 (-2).

CJ Lee fired a 75 (+3) on the second day of the NCAA regional. The senior, who is tied for 53rd, birdied the par-4 ninth hole.

Spencer Dunaway carded a 74 (+2) on the second day and is tied for 71st.

The Cougars compete in the final day of the NCAA Norman Regional Wednesday, May 16, at 8:00 a.m. CDT at the Jimmie Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Club. Live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com.
