AUSTIN, TX -- BYU's Oscar Alvarez won the Morris Williams Intercollegiate tournament in commanding fashion Tuesday, leading the Cougars to a 3rd place finish.

It was Oscar's first tournament victory of the season, and second of his career.

BYU assistant coach, Todd Miller, said that this win will have a big impact on Oscar's All-American status.

"He was way overdue for a win," Miller said. "Oscar is such a good player and this win is a great confidence boost as he goes into the rest of the season."

Oscar finished at -7 for the tournament, 3 shots better than Oscar Floren from Texas Tech. Oscar shot an impressive 69 and 68 in the first two rounds, before finishing up with a 72 on Tuesday.

Oscar's play carried the Cougars team which finished at -1 for the tournament.

"Other than Oscar, the rest of the team played pretty mediocre for our standards," Miller said. "It was a very tough course, but the guys hung in there.

Miller said that the biggest area the team needs to improve on lies in the short game.

"We need to work on our chip and wedge shots," he said. "Our shots were sloppy from about 100 yards and in."

BYU has a couple days to work out the kinks before heading out to Georgia to play in the U.S. College Championship on the 10th through the 11th of April.
