PROVO -- After defeating Colorado State less than 24 hours earlier, the Cougars had enough energy left in their tanks to defeat New Mexico, 136-105, Saturday. The win improves the Cougars to 5-3 in dual-meet action on the season.
Both relays teams won for the Cougars for valuable team points. Freshman Nichole Burrows led both teams to victory. The 200 medley relay team of Burrows, Amanda Grant, Tina Adkinson, and Cortnee Adams won by with a time of 1:48.00. The 200 free relay team of Burrows, Melissa Busby, Monica Ferrell, and Heidi Leitz won with a time of 1:38.33.
Adams led the way winning the 50 free with a time of 23.81, a full second ahead of second place. The junior sprinter from Appleton, Wis. also won the 500 free with a time of 5:11.00.
Other winners included Burrows, who won the 200 backstroke event, posting a time of 2:07.89. Leitz won the 100 free with a time of 53.72, Following close in second place was teammate Grant at 53.75. Sophomore Tamber Covington won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.56.
"New Mexico swam tough today," said women's head swim coach Stan Crump. "We don't match up well against them and had to shuffle our line-up a bit."
The Cougars take the road next week with combined meets at Air Force on Thursday and at Wyoming on Saturday.
