Cougars Split Meet Against Pacific
PROVO -- The BYU men's team dominated Pacific while fatigue showed for the women's swimming team as they split their meet Saturday. The men improve to 3-0 in dual meet action this season while the women fall to 3-1.
The men's team won eight of 13 events to beat Pacific 135-62. The victory extends the BYU men's dual meet winning streak to 19 straight victories, dating back to the 1999-2000 season. The women's squad won four of 13 events, but lost 102-135.
Junior Jeffrey Mason won the 100 and 200 free and was a part of the 200 free relay team that posted a conference best time of 1:23.29. Junior Gary Tan won the 100 fly and the 200 I.M. and was a part of the winning 200-medley relay team. Sophomore Brian Sorensen won the 50 free for the third straight time this season while swimming an amazing time of 21.02. Sorensen was also the anchor for the winning 200-medley relay team. Junior Christopher Johnson won the 100 back and sophomore Randy Beliiston won the 500 free.
"Overall our team is very deep and well-balanced," said men's head swim coach Tim Powers. "We will continue to improve our times as the season progresses."
For the women, All-American Cortnee Adams won the 50 free and was the anchor for the first place 200 free relay . Kelli Einfeldt won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events for the divers for the second consecutive night.
"Pacific is a top 20 team and coming into the meet today, I thought we had a chance to beat them," said women's head swim coach Stan Crump. "We did not swim poorly, especially in the relays. You have to give Pacific a lot of credit."
Both teams will prepare for the annual Speedo Cup in Long Beach, Calif., from Nov. 29 through Dec. 1.
BYU women's basketball hosts in-state rival, No. 15 Utah on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 5 p.m. MT at the Marriott Center.
