Men's Tennis Team Falls To New Mexico in MWC Match

Once again winning the doubles point did not give the BYU men's tennis team an advantage in their dual match against New Mexico, as the Cougar team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Lobos, Saturday.

This was the third straight loss to a conference opponent for BYU who now has a 9-8, 3-3 record on the season. New Mexico improved to 7-12, 1-1. The Lobos will host this year's conference championships beginning April 20.

BYU's number one and three doubles team won their matches to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead against New Mexico. But BYU only managed one victory in singles at the number two position. Carlos Lozano, a freshman from Tlalnepantla, Mexico, defeated UNM's Nic Dubey in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. All other matches were won by the Lobos who play UNLV on Sunday in more MWC action.

The Cougars will play their final regular conference match on April 5 as they host instate rival Utah in their second meeting. Earlier this year, BYU beat Utah in Salt Lake City, 4-3. The upcoming match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., Wednesday at the Cougars' indoor facility, just behind the Smith Fieldhouse. The BYU vs Utah match, will be the Cougars final home event of the year and will also be Damien Ward's final collegiate match at home, the lone senior on the BYU roster.
