WALNUT, Calif.—Curtis Carr posted the fastest collegiate time in the nation in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead BYU at the Mt. San Antonio College (SAC) Relays this weekend.

“It’s been a really good couple of days,” head coach Ed Eyestone said. “We had some big time performances and hopefully that can really slingshot us to a great rest of the season.”

Carr’s time of 8:37.54 was second in the meet only to Canadian professional and olympian Matt Hughes. With the top mark in the country, he has qualified for the NCAA regional meet. It was his first time this season participating in the event after taking fourth at the NCAA Championships last year.

Jared Ward continued to impress for the Cougars, taking fifth in the 5,000 meters. His time of 13:26.98 was good for fourth fastest collegiate time of the outdoor season.

Tommy Gruenewald took 14th in the 10,000 meters with a time of 29:37.56, which should serve as a qualifying mark for the regional meet. Jonathan Harper posted a time of 14:16.55 in the 5,000 meters to take seventh place in his heat, a promising performance for the freshman.

The Cougars return home to host the BYU Robison Invitational April 23-26 at the Clarence F. Robison Track & Field Complex.
