Birk-Jarvis breaks fourth school record
STANFORD, Calif. – Erica Birk-Jarvis broke her fourth school record in three months as BYU track and field competed at the Stanford Invitational, UVU Invite, Texas Relays and Mike Fanelli Track Classic on Friday.
After breaking three school records during the 2019 indoor season, All-American Erica Birk-Jarvis didn’t break her stride in her outdoor debut and set a new BYU record in the 5000m with a time of 15:38.12. The previous record of 15:44.55 was set by Whitney McDonald in 2007.
All-American steeplechaser Matt Owens moved up to No. 5 all-time at BYU in the 3000m steeplechase after running a career-best 8:36.00. Owens’ time was good enough for second place in the men’s 3000m steeplechase invitational. Fellow All-American Clayson Shumway crossed the finish line just behind Owens for third place (8:38.62) while Jacob Heslington placed eighth overall (8:43.84).
All-American Whittni Orton had a strong debut in the women’s 1500m invitational after finishing with a time of 4:15.44. Teammates Lauren Ellsworth-Barnes and Anna Camp-Bennett finished 1-2 in their 1500m section with times of 4:18.95 and 4:20.95, respectively. In the women’s 3000m steeplechase invitational, Maddie Cannon ran a 10:12.37 to finish eighth place.
In the men’s 5000m invitational, All-American Connor McMillan competed in his first race of the outdoor season after finishing the indoor season with first-team All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. McMillan finished the 5000m race with a time of 13:50.37 and took eighth overall.
Due to late start times, the men’s and women’s 10,000m results will be included in the Saturday recap. However, results can be found before then on athletic.net.
Jacob Foutz solidified his position to potentially qualify for the NCAA West Prelims in the men’s hammer with a season-best 60.34m/197-11.50. The senior also finished in second place in the men’s discus with a toss of 51.11m/167-8.75. Jefferson Jarvis took first in the men’s discus with a mark of 51.25m/168-1.75.
Andrea Stapleton-Johnson placed first in the women’s high jump with a clearance of 1.81m/5-11.25. In the men’s high jump, AJ Beynon finished fourth overall with a jump of 1.98m/6-6.
Patrick Parker finished almost three seconds ahead of the next runner to claim first place in the men’s 800m with a time of 1:52.86. Conner Kennedy took second place in the long jump with a mark of 6.99m/22-11.25.
In the women’s discus, Leah Thompson and Addisyn Peacock finished 4-5 with throws of 44.15m/144-10.25 and 42.20m/138-5.5, respectively. Sable Lohmeier earned a third-place finish in the women’s hammer with a toss of 49.05m/160-11.
Austin Carter took second in the men’s shot put with a mark of 16.71m/54-9.75 and Harrison Gould threw a 15.19/49-10 in the shot put for fourth place. In the women’s javelin, Elyse Cuthbertson finished second overall with a throw of 42.21m/138-5.75.
Brenna Porter finished second overall (58.77) in the 400m hurdles preliminary round on Thursday to qualify for the final on Friday. The All-American clocked a 58.65 in the 400m hurdles final to claim fifth place.
The men’s 4x400m relay team ran a 3:11.28 to take seventh place in the first round of the 4x400m relays and qualify for the final. The relay team consists of Michael Bluth, Cortez Ruiz, Blake Ellis and Scott Mecham.
Mecham also competed in the 400m hurdles where he ran a 53.64. Teammate Jesus Serrano finished first in his head of the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.14.
Mike Fanelli Track Classic
On Thursday, freshman Aubrey Frentheway capped off her collegiate debut in the women’s 10,000m with a fourth-place finish and a time of 35:11.68. Teammates Britney Lund and Amanda Erickson finished 11-12 in the 10,000m with times of 35:40.47 and 35:41.45, respectively.
