FORT COLLINS -- Saturday afternoon turned into a hitting clinic as BYU collected 30 runs on 31 hits in a doubleheader sweep over Colorado State, 14-10 and 16-13.
The Cougars, now 28-14 and 8-2 in Mountain West Conference play, scored early and often in both games. BYU needed the 30 runs as the Rams (22-15, 3-6 MWC) were equal to the task offensively. The Cougars have scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game.
"Today was one of the most impressive hitting performances I've seen as a coach," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "Even in the innings we didn't score we had runners on base."
In game one, BYU scored three in the first inning on a two-run single by Emi Snow and a RBI single by Jodi Norton. In the second, Andrea Ramirez nailed a RBI single then scored on a run-scoring double by Ashlyn Russell.
The Cougars went deep in the third frame, getting a pair of two-run homers from Norton and Ianeta Le`i. After a rare scoreless inning, Ramirez nailed a three-run homer for BYU in the fifth.
Summer Tobias got the job done from the pitchers circle giving up five earned runs while pitching a complete game. The eventual winner of game two, Tobias is 4-0 in her last four appearances.
"We are still fighting through some injuries to our pitchers," Eakin said. "Fortunately our offense stepped up in a big way."
Game two started much like the first tilt. Aft BYU put two runners on in the top of the first, Le`i hit a three-run round-tripper. After Snow walked, Jennifer Whiteley came up with a RBI triple to put the Cougars ahead 4-0 early.
In the second inning, Le`i homered again, a two run shot as the Cougars took an 8-0 lead. CSU scored 11 consecutive runs. The Rams hit two home runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-8 lead.
The Cougars followed Colorado State's scoring spurt with six consecutive runs of their own to take a 14-11 lead. BYU wouldn't relinquish the lead again, finishing with the 16-14 victory.
The Cougars will face off with three in-state foes when they take to the road to play Utah State Tuesday before returning home Thursday to play Utah Valley State.
