BYU at Santa Clara Game Notes

PROVO, Utah— BYU women’s basketball (13-10, 8-4) is tied for second place with Saint Mary’s entering this week’s West Coast Conference action. The Cougars are in Northern California for two league games.

BYU is at Santa Clara (7-16, 3-9) on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. PST. The Cougars then go to San Francisco for a Saturday, Feb. 10 game against the Dons (11-12, 6-6). That contest tips off at 2 p.m. PST. Both games will have a live video stream available on TheW.tv.

ABOUT BYU

  • In 21 games at least two players finished with double-digit points, including three in the home loss to Gonzaga.
  • Averages 68.0 points and 38.0 rebounds while shooting 42.3 percent from the field, 32.6 percent from the 3-point line and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.
  • Nationally, BYU ranks eighth in blocked shots and ninth in blocked shots per game.
  • Senior guard Cassie Broadhead Devashrayee ranks second in free throw attempts, third in free throws made and ninth in minutes played.
  • Freshman center Sara Hamson ranks second in blocked shots per game and in blocked shots.
  • In 16 games, BYU has tallied more blocks than its opponents.

  • Santa Clara has captured league wins over Portland, San Diego and Pepperdine.
  • The Broncos average 52.6 points and 33.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 36.7 percent from the field, 27.2 percent from the 3-point line and 66.9 percent from the charity stripe.
  • Bill Carr, who is in his second season at the helm of the Santa Clara women’s basketball program, has compiled a 21-32 record to date.

SERIES HISTORY

  • The Cougars have a 15-2 advantage in the series with the Broncos.
  • This will be the second meeting between the two foes. This year in the first game played in Provo, BYU won 65-47 on Jan. 13.
  • The Cougars are 6-2 when playing at the Leavey Center. BYU last won in Santa Clara on Jan. 7, 2016, when it picked up a 68-63 victory. 
  • Last season the two WCC foes split the series with each team winning on its home court.

ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO

  • The Dons are 11-12, 6-6 on the year and are in a two-way tie with Pacific for fourth place in the WCC.
  • USF swept the series with Santa Clara while also picking up wins over Portland, Pepperdine, LMU and Pacific.
  • At home, San Francisco has a 4-3 record in league play.
  • Head coach Molly Goodenbour is in her second year with USF where she has a 29-25 record.

SERIES HISTORY

  • BYU leads the overall series 17-4.
  • This will be the second meeting between the two foes. In the first game played in Provo on Jan. 4, the Cougars got the four-point 70-66 home win.
  • When playing at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco, BYU has a 6-2 record. The Cougars last won at USF on Jan. 9, 2016, a 66-57 road victory.
  • In last year’s WCC race, the two league foes split the series with each team winning on its home court.

UP NEXT
After the two road games, BYU is home for three-straight WCC games. It hosts Pepperdine on Feb. 15 and San Diego on Feb. 17. The final home game is vs. Portland on Feb. 22.
