Cougars finish fourth at MWC Championships

Sunriver, Ore. - BYU finished fourth at the 2001 Mountain West Conference Championships and Carrie Summerhays was named the MWC Player of the Year on Wednesday at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon.

The University of New Mexico captured its second consecutive Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championship today on the Meadows Course (Par 71/5,851). The No. 24 Lobos finished the final round with a one-under 283 and a 54-hole total of 861 (+9). Colorado State and San Diego State tied for second place with identical 54-hole totals of 887 (+35). The Aztecs overcame a four-stroke difference on the final 18 holes (291) to catch the Rams (295) and forge the second-place tie. BYU finished in fourth place with a team total of 900 (311-292-297), while Wyoming finished fifth at 936 (317-312-307).

Summerhays, who led the conference in stroke average heading into the tournament, was selected by MWC coaches as the Player of the Year. Last year she earned Co-Player of the Year honors with 2001 MWC tournament champion senior Ryley Webb of New Mexico.

Webb was the individual champion after firing a three-day total of 209 (-4). Webb entered the final round one stroke behind teammate Elisa Kase and shot a two-under 69 today to capture the title. Kase had an even-par (71) on the final 18 holes and finished second with a 54-hole total of 210 (-3). Summerhays, a junior All-American from Heber City, Utah, shot a final round 74 to finish 80-70-74--224 and in seventh place.

Lisa Dernick and Adrianne Gibby completed solid tournaments by firing final round 73s to finish 10th and 11th respectively.

"Although our second round 292 was pretty close, we haven't played our best golf yet," BYU head coach Gary Howard said. "We keep getting better with each tournament and with Carrie's (Summerhays) game coming around we've got a chance to really do well at regionals."

BYU will next compete in the NCAA Regionals May 11-13. Seedings and regional location will be disclosed early next week.
