PROVO – No. 6 BYU women's soccer closes out its last stretch of West Coast Conference road games starting with its game against San Diego on Friday.
With four straight conference titles, the Cougars (12-2-1, 3-1-1 WCC) come into Friday's game trailing both Pepperdine (9-3-3, 4-0-1) and LMU (9-3-3, 4-1-0) in the WCC standings.
For the second straight game, BYU could possibly be without Ashley Hatch, depending on whether she makes the U.S. Women's National Team's roster for upcoming October friendlies. Hatch is tied for the nation's lead with 15 goals this season.
After going without a goal or assist in the first three games of 2016, Michele Vasconcelos has scored a point (goal or assist) in 10 of 12 games for the Cougars. She's had both a goal and an assist in four of those, including against Portland in BYU's 3-0 win last Saturday.
BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood comes into Friday's game seeking her 350th career win, with an all-time record of 349-99-38 (.757).
San Diego Storylines
After going 5-13-2, 3-6-0 last season, the Toreros are much-improved, with an 8-6-1, 3-2-0 mark in 2016. Fourth-place San Diego has wins against Santa Clara and San Francisco—teams that finished well ahead of them in the conference standings last year.
Sophomore Summer Mason, a transfer from Seattle University, has been a key addition for the Toreros. Her four goals and four assists give her the team lead with 12 points. Senior Jacqueline Altschuld follows close behind with four goals and three assists.
San Diego is 6-0-1 at home this season, compared to its 1-6-0 record on the road.
