Cougars downed by No. 21 Colorado
BOULDER, Colo. — The BYU women’s soccer team fell 3-0, to No. 21 Colorado at Prentup Field Monday afternoon.
“Today we got off to a good start," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "It's humbling and a learning experience. We've got to score goals, it's as simple as that. But we have a great group of girls who are anxious and wanting to fight."
Going up against a defense that is yet to concede a goal this season, the Cougars (0-3-2) came out hard, creating multiple opportunities at goal, including a great chance by senior forward Nadia Gomes in the 18th minute that was knocked out by the Buffs’ goalkeeper.
Colorado (4-0-2) found the back of the net in the 23rd minute when the ball was crossed into the 18-yard box and headed to the top of the box where Taylor Kornieck was open and took a hard shot to the left side of the goal past Hannah Clark to give the Buffs a 1-0 lead.
After the first half, BYU led with eight shots, including three on goal, compared to Colorado’s six and one. Sophomore midfielder Lizzy Braby led all shooters at the half with three.
In the 56th minute, the Buffs added another goal when Kornieck crossed the ball to Tatum Barton who managed to one-touch it into the goal.
Barton scored her second goal of the game in the 83rd minute when she out ran the BYU defense and placed the ball in the top right corner.
At the end of 90 minutes, the Cougars and Buffs each recorded 10 shots. The Buffs’ finished all three of their shots on goal in the game.
