MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – The BYU women’s 200 medley relay team and the men's 800 freestyle relay team each took fifth place in the opening events of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Wednesday.

“As for this evening, I felt like our women’s team did a pretty good job”, head swim coach John Brooks said. “The men’s team had a rough start with a disqualification in the relay. Hopefully we can keep improving and be ready for the big races tomorrow”.

The women’s 200 medley relay team, consisting of Ashlee Spindler as lead, Anna Dahl, Tiare Coker and Natalie Bennion as anchor, completed the race in 1:41.11. They were just shy of the BYU record, which was set in 2011 at 1:40.23.

Registering a time of 7:24.02, the BYU women’s 800 freestyle relay team, with teammates Lauren Taylor, Ellie Thornbrue, Bennion and Coker, took sixth place.

BYU’s top men’s 200 medley relay team was disqualified because of an early take-off in the event.

In the men’s 800 freestyle relay, Preston Jenkins, Luis Ventura, Ethan Kramer and David Harlan worked in synch to complete the race in 6:34.43, ending in fifth place overall.

The MPSF Championships will continue Thursday, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. PST, followed by event finals at 6 p.m Diving will begin at 11 a.m. at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena, California. Fans can follow the meet through the live stream or live results page. Complete results will be posted on the website at the conclusion of the day’s events.
