SANTA CLARA, Calif. –Senior Morgan Anderson-Littlewood secured wins in singles and doubles play to lead No. 50 BYU women’s tennis to a 5-2 victory over Santa Clara Saturday.
“The girls played tough tennis today and fought hard,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “We are looking to build off this math for our home matches coming this week.”
The Cougars (8-7, 3-3) got the first point of the match to go up 1-0 with two quick doubles wins. Anderson-Littlwood and Meghan Sheehan-Dizon were first off the court with a 6-2 win over Riley Morgan and Zeina El Tawil at No. 3 doubles. Savannah Ware and Nicolette Tran locked up the doubles point when they beat Chelby Cooke and Delphine Rouvillois 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
The Broncos (3-7, 0-2) evened the score by quickly winning the first singles match at No. 1 singles slot. Sheehan-Dizon fell to Rouvillois in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. BYU then grabbed the next three matchups to complete the match victory. Toby Miclat defeated Daniella Silva at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-3 while Anderson-Littlewood outplayed El Tawil at No. 5 to a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
With the Cougars up 3-1, Erica Valimaki clinched the match at No. 6 singles against Morgan, winning 7-5, 6-2. Though the match was over, Santa Clara picked up a point with a win at No. 2 doubles. Nabila Farah beat Tran 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 11-9. Ware won the last point of the match at No. 4 singles, beating Cooke 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
BYU returns home for two matches this week. They face Pac-12 foe Washington State on Thursday and host a conference match against Pepperdine on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled for noon and live scoring will be available through the women’s tennis schedule page.
