PROVO, Utah – Following a successful weekend in Arizona, the BYU track and field team heads down to California for three different meets and one in Utah. Distance runners will be competing in the Mt. SAC Relays, throwers will be competing in the Long Beach State-Pacific Intercollegiate Meet which also includes The Beach Invitational and other athletes will be competing in the Bryan Clay Invitational. Sprinters, hurdlers, jumps and multi-event athletes will head to Logan for Utah State's Mark Faldmo Invitational.
“It’s a big weekend for us, especially for our distance runners and athletes who run the steeplechase,” BYU head coach Ed Eyestone said. “We are looking for them to get good times and marks from these athletes at the various meets. The athletes have an opportunity to achieve those regional qualifying marks.”
Rory Linkletter will make his outdoor season debut after coming off of running for team Canada in the Cross Country World Championships. He will be running the 10,000-meter at the Mt. SAC Relays.
“We are hoping Rory can secure a regional qualifying mark and I believe he will be able to do that,” Eyestone said. “He will definitely be a big athlete to watch compete.”
Eyestone said Spencer Hansen, Brayden McLellan, Jacob Heslington and Clayton Shumway are also male athletes to watch compete in the 10,000-meter race at the Mt. SAC Invitational.
On the women’s side, Laura Young and Yesenia Silva will be ones to watch for as they compete in the women’s 10,000-meter run. This will be Young's first 10,000-meter race, but Silva previously recorded a time of 34:50.62 during the 2016 outdoor season.
The Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational will kick off on Thursday, April 13, and come to an end on Friday, April 14. The Intercollegiate Meet in Long Beach will begin Thursday and conclude Saturday.
Throwers will be competing at the Intercollegiate Meet in Long Beach, California, and Eyestone said 800-meter athletes, as well as some other mid-distance athletes, will be running at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California.
