Young, Birk-Jarvis set school records at Iowa State Classic
AMES, Iowa – All-Americans Clayton Young and Erica Birk-Jarvis broke BYU indoor records as BYU track and field completed the first day of competition at the Iowa State Classic and Texas Tech Shootout.
Iowa State Classic
Birk Jarvis broke the all-time record at BYU on her way to winning the women’s 3000m invite at the Iowa State Classic. Her time of 9:00.69 broke the previous record of 9:04.06 set in 2004 by All-American Michaela Mannova.
Young took first in the men’s 5000m invite at the Iowa State Classic with a time of 13:34.46 to set the new school record. The senior also ran the fastest times in meet and facility history breaking the previous records by almost three seconds. Current teammate, All-American Rory Linkletter set the previous 5000m school record at the Iowa State Classic last season.
All-American Connor McMillan and Conner Mantz moved up BYU’s top 10 record boards in the 5000m as well. McMillan clocked 13:38.63 to move up five spots to No. 2 all-time while Mantz finished with a time of 13:39.27 for the third-best time in school history. Linkletter and Jacob Heslington both finished under 14 minute in the 5000m with times of 13:42.07 and 13:58.46, respectively.
Texas Tech Shootout
Michael Bluth ran a career-best 46.94 in the men’s 400m to earn a spot on the school record boards with the fourth-best time in BYU history. Teammate Colten Yardley also finished with a personal best in the 400m with a time of 48.11.
Clark Brown clocked a 6.81 in the men’s 60m prelims to advance to the final where he took fifth place with a time of 6.75. Haley Rogers ran a season-best 7.71 in the women’s 60m while Kaitlyn Gunnerson-Burrup earned a personal record in the women’s 60m hurdles with a time of 8.76.
Rickey Fantroy matched his career best in the men’s triple jump for the third time this season with a distance of 14.93m/48-11.75 on his way to finishing seventh. Jacob Foutz took fifth in the men’s weight throw with a toss of 18.58m/60-11.5.
