BYU makes its 12th NCAA Regional Semifinal appearance Friday when it faces No. 4-ranked Florida on the University of Pacific campus in Stockton, Calif. The Cougars advanced to the East Regional after a first-round win over Princeton (15-5, 15-5, 15-5) and a second-round triumph over Wisconsin (6-15, 15-10, 15-4, 15-9). Host school Pacific will play Northern Iowa in the other semifinal match Friday with the winners taking the court Saturday in a 7 p.m. to see who will go to NCAA Final Four in Honolulu.

Semifinal Round Notes
BYU has played in 11 regional semifinals over its 18 years in the NCAA Tournament and has an 8-3 record. The Cougars have won their last five regional semifinal matches, including the each of the past three years. BYU last lost in the regional semifinals in 1988, when UCLA defeated the Cougars in three games on its home court. The loss ended BYU's string of three straight regional semifinal wins from 1985-87, including a 1987 win over the Bruins. BYU lost its first two appearances in the round of 16, losing to UCLA and Stanford in 1982 and 1983. Overall, the Cougars were victorious in 1985, 86, 87, 92, 93, 96, 97 and 98. In the first year of the NCAA Tournament, BYU received a first-round bye and advanced directly to the Regional finals, losing to UC Santa Barbara. Last year, BYU defeated Pacific in the Central Regional Semifinals held at Penn State. They also defeated the Tigers in the 1996 semifinal in Honolulu. BYU has never played in a Regional Semifinal in Stockton.
Cougars in the NCAA
The Cougars are 24-17 overall in the NCAA tournament. They are making their 10th straight tournament appearance and their 18th in 19 years. BYU is one of five schools to have earned 18 NCAA invitations. Only four schools have ever been all 19 years -- Pacific, UC Santa Barbara, Penn State and Stanford. BYU's best-ever NCAA finish was a Final Four berth in 1993. The Cougars lost to Penn State in the Championship Semifinals.
BYU Last Week in NCAA First and Second Rounds
Led by the hitting of sophomore Nina Puikkonen, the BYU women's volleyball team came from behind to defeat Wisconsin 3-1 (6-15, 15-10, 15-4, 15-9) Saturday at the Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah. Puikkonen, who was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, lifted the Cougars from a 1-0 deficit to take the next three games and give BYU the victory. She finished the night with 24 kills and a .477 hitting percentage while also contributing seven blocks. The Cougars hit --.080 in the first game which was the first game of the season that saw the Cougars hit a negative team percentage. They bounced back to hit .364 in the second and took the game 15-10. The BYU block was also a strong key to the victory. The Cougars had 20 team blocks to the Badgers' eight. Sophomore Jackie Bundy led both teams with nine blocks and 14 digs. Senior Mari Carpenter, who didn't play in the first round match against Princeton last night because of a sore back, finished with 10 kills and a career-high eight blocks. Freshman Erin Byrd and senior Allyson Ross led the way for the Badgers. Byrd finished the night with a double-double, tallying 12 kills and13 digs. Ross, playing in the final match of her career, ended the night with 11 kills and eight digs. BYU defeated Princeton, the Ivy League Champions, in three games in its first-round match. For the two matches, Puikkonen hit .494 while averaging 6.14 kills, 2.00 blocks and 1.71 digs. Sunny Tonga and Anna-Lena Smith also hit over .400 for the week, with Tonga at a .484 clip and Smith at .471.
A Quick Look at the Cougars
BYU has won 14 of its last 15 matches and 22 of its last 24. BYU has won 20 of their 28 victories in three games. All four Cougar losses have been in three games and come against NCAA Tournament participants Michigan, Stanford, and Colorado State (twice). BYU's had a 28-match home win streak broken by Colorado State in the Mountain West Conference Tournament Finals. BYU is 5-0 in four-game matches and 3-0 in five-game contests. BYU's coach Elaine Michaelis has 840 victories and is second all-time in NCAA Division I coaching victories and is the top female coach ever. The Cougars are led on the court by senior All-American setter Anna-Lena Smith and sophomore middle blocker Nina Puikkonen, who have both earn All-District honors this year. Five Cougars were named to the Mountain West Conference All-Conference teams.
Series Notes
This will be the sixth meeting between Florida and BYU with the Cougars holding a 3-2 record in the series. The two schools last met at the 1997 Florida Invitational in Gainsville, with the host Gators prevailing in a closely contested four-game battle, 8-15, 10-15, 15-13, 14-16. Florida was ranked No. 2 in the nation and the Cougars No. 10 and each team boasted a player who had been named national player of the week that year, Florida's Nina Foster and BYU's Amy Steele Gant. Caroline Bower, now a senior, led BYU in the match with 18 kills. BYU outblocked the Gators 15-12 but were out hit .237-.201. This will be the first meeting between the two schools in the NCAA Tournament. BYU has played Northern Iowa once, a BYU win in 1991. The Cougars have faced the Pacific Tigers 11 times with Pacific leading the series 7-4. BYU won the last meeting in last year's NCAA Central Regional Semifinal in University Park, Pa.
Puikkonen Named MWC Player of the Year
Sophomore middle blocker Nina Puikkonen headlines the first-ever All-Mountain West Conference Volleyball Team as the unanimous choice by the coaches for player-of-the-year honors. Puikkonen ranks fourth in the nation and led BYU with a 1.95 blocks per game average and topped the conference with a 1.90 average in league matches. Her 378 total kills led the Cougars while her conference average of 4.07 kills in league matches listed her among the top-three in the conference the entire season. She hit an impressive .370 in league matches and finished the regular-season hitting .355 overall.
Five Cougars Earn MWC Honors
In addition to sophomore Nina Puikkonen earning her second first-team all-conference award, senior outside hitter Caroline Bower and senior setter Anna-Lena Smith were named to the All-MWC First Team. Smith has earned first-team honors in each of her four seasons as a Cougar while Bower earned the distinction for the first time. Senior Mari Carpenter earned second-team honors for the second straight year while Sunny Tonga was named the MWC Freshman of the Year. This year, Smith and Tonga also put themselves in BYU's record book as Smith set BYU's all-time assist record and Tonga established the single-match attack percentage record.
Michaelis Notables
Now in her 38th year at the helm of the BYU program, Elaine Michaelis also enters her fifth year as Director of Women's Athletics. A proven winner, Michaelis is second all-time in Division I victories with an 840-208-5 record (since records were kept in 1969) and has the most wins ever by a female coach. With this year's Mountain West Conference regular season title, she has the distinction of winning the inaugural championship in each of the five leagues BYU has belonged to since starting to play volleyball. Last year, Michaelis reached the milestone of 800 victories while coaching the Cougars to their third straight NCAA Regional Final. Michaelis, whose 31-4 record last year marked the eighth time she has recorded more than 30 victories in a season. With her 25 wins this year, she has 26 straight 20-win seasons.
Anna-Lena Smith
All-American setter Anna-Lena Smith has earned All-District VII honors for the second straight year and is averaging 12.93 assists per game. She has the Cougars hitting .298 as a team (sixth in the nation). At Wyoming earlier this year , she set BYU's all-time assist record surpassing the old record held by current U.S. National Team setter Charlene Johnson Tagaloa (5, 321). She has 5,934 career assists entering this week. Smith equalled a career-high with nine kills against Colorado State in the MWC Tournament.
Nina Puikkonen
Puikkonen was named to the All-District VII team for the second consecutive year and is averaging 1.87 blocks per game, which ranks third in the nation. Last year she lead the country in blocking as a freshman. She has 432 career blocks in only her second season. The sophomore sensation was named to the Mountain West Conference All-Tournament Team after hitting .418 and reaching double figures in kills in all three matches. She has had double-digit kills in 29 of BYU's 32 matches this year.
Sunny Tonga
True freshman Sunny Tonga was named Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year this season. She has seen more and more time as the season has progressed with her solid and at times record-setting play. She is hitting .351 and averaging 2.72 kills per game. At Wyoming earlier this year she set a MWC and BYU single-match attack percentage record when she put down 10 kills in 11 attempts without a single error for a .909 hitting percentage. The next match against Arizona State she had 13 kills in 14 attempts with one error to record BYU's third-best single-match effort of .857. She had a career-high 15 kills at San Diego State.
Caroline Bower
Senior Caroline Bower is a first-team All-Mountain West outside hitter. She has seven double-doubles this year and matched a career-best 27 digs -- a Mountain West Conference record -- against the No. 18 Arizona Wildcats earlier this season. BYU's most consistent all-around player, she is averaging nearly three kills (2.95) and a team-leading 3.15 digs per game while hitting .250.
Mari Carpenter
Senior Mari Carpenter is hitting .340 on the year and averaging 3.76 kills per game. She has hit better than .300 16 times, topped .400 eight times and .500 six times. She hit a career-high .846 (11-0-13) vs. Utah State and had career-best eight blocks against Wisconsin last Saturday.
NCAA Championship Notables
Ten teams are making their first appearance in the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. They are Baylor, Davidson, Florida A&M, James Madison, Northern Arizona, Prairie View and Robert Morris. Four institutions have played in all 19 championships: Pacific (Cal.), Penn State, Stanford and UC Santa Barbara. The Big Ten Conference placed the most teams in the championship field with eight, followed by the Big 12 Conference with six and the Pacific-10 Conference with five. The Big West and West Coast conferences are each represented by four institutions. The Mountain West Conference received three selections. In the 18-year history of the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, eight schools have been crowned champion, all of which are in the 1999 field. Stanford has won four titles (1992, 94, 96, 97), while Hawai`i (1982, 83, 87), Long Beach State (1989, 93, 98) and UCLA (1984, 90, 91) have claimed three each. Pacific (Cal.) has taken the trophy twice (1985, 86), and Nebraska (1995), Texas (1988) and Southern California (1981) each once.
New Mountain West Conference
The Mountain West Conference entered its inaugural season in 1999. MWC schools own a 77-41 combined record against opponents from other
conferences and collectively won 254 games and lost just 164 in non-league contests. Three schools (BYU, Utah, CSU) are in this year's NCAA Tournament and six schools (BYU, CSU, Utah, UNM, SDSU and Wyoming) have competed in the NCAAs at least twice this decade. The Mountain West Conference schools have a 5-1 record in this year's tournament with BYU and Colorado State advancing to Regionals.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- BYU defeated Pacific (26-6) in four games in the NCAA Regional semifinal match. Nina Puikkonen led BYU with a .444 hitting percentage, 20 digs, and eight blocks. She put down 16 kills, second only to Helen Hjorth, who had 17. Melissa Layton added 16 kills while Korie Rogers contributed 14 kills and 18 digs.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- An outstanding season for No. 7 BYU came to a close as No. 2 Penn State defeated the Cougars to win the NCAA Central Region Final. Both teams made a tough battle of the first game, stretching it out for 45 minutes as the lead switched back and forth. Nina Puikkonen had 17 kills to led BYU. Korie Rogers and Puikkonen were both named to the NCAA All-Central Regional Team. (31-4, 13-1)
A Glimpse Back at the 1998 Season
BYU was second in the nation in blocking (3.77 bpg), sixth in hitting (.291) and 19th in assists (15.20 apg). Puikkonen was the nation's top blocker (2.17 bpg). Puikkonen (Volleyball magazine Freshman), Korie Rogers and Anna-Lena Smith (both AVCA Second Team) earned All-America, District VII, and first-team All-WAC honors. The 31-4 record was the team's best since 1987. The Cougars four losses were to eventual national champion Long Beach State (1-3), NCAA runner-up Penn State (0-3) and No. 5 Hawaii, who edged BYU in two of three matches, both times in five-game marathons.
