Szmuda Wins at Texas Relays, Utah State Triangular Canceled

AUSTIN -- The BYU men's and women's track teams competed at the76th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and qualified a couple more athletes for the regional meet. Part of the BYU squads was slated to compete in the Utah State Triangular, but the meet was canceled due to bad weather.

At the Texas Relays, the men's 4x400-meter relay team posted a season best time of 3:08.21 and placed third. Junior jumper Aron Szmuda won the section B long jump with a leap of 25-01.75 and placed sixth in the section A long jump with a distance of 34-11.25. Szmuda also jumped 48-05.25 in the triple jump to place seventh.

Several decathletes showed a strong start to the outdoor season, with Curtis Pugsley leading the way. Pugsley scored 7,249 points and placed fifth. Greg Flint placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.35.

Sprinters coach Leonard Myles-Mills said, "Every week the guys gain confidence. They have high hopes each week they will perform well."

The women's team qualified two athletes of regionals. All-American high jumper Lindsey Metcalf competed for the first time this season and qualified for regionals with a jump of 5-08.75. She placed fifth in the event. Despite not advancing to the final heat, Jennifer Rockwell ran a regional qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles of 1:01.13. The women's team placed sixth in the 1,600-meter sprint medley with a time of 3:54.14.

The Cougars will next compete at the Sun Angel Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., and the Wildcat Invitation in Ogden, Utah, next weekend.
