PROVO -- The BYU women's tennis team lost for the first time this season, as they bowed out to the ninth ranked lady Huskies 6-1.
But the match was a lot closer than it showed on paper. Early on, the girls dominated on the doubles court. Playing number 2 doubles for the Cougars, Anastasia Sourkova and Dolly Chang (3-0) remain unbeaten on the season as they easily handled the Huskies second singles team of Mugette Ahn and Tara Simpson 8-3. BYU's Pike and Boulytcheva (3-0) also haven't suffered a loss this year as they beat Washington's Navenberg and Rainey 8-6 to give BYU an early lead in the match.
But whatever momentum the Cougars had soon evaporated once singles started. After a heroic effort yesterday against Washington State, BYU's Lauren Jones couldn't quite find a rhythm today, losing to Washington's number 1 single's player Dea Sumantri 6-1,6-0. But the real heartbreakers were to come at the three and four singles.
Cougar Olga Boulytcheva lost a tough three set match to Mugette Ahn 6-2,4-6,6-2 while sophmore Sofia Holden ran out of steam losing in another tough three set match to Washington's Saskia Nauenberg 6-4,6-7,6-3.
The Cougars are 2-1 on the year facing Kansas and Kansas State next weekend.
