Colorado Springs, Colo. (April 9th 2005)---The No. 26 BYU women's tennis team sent the Air Force Falcons into the wild blue yonder, sweeping them 7-0 for BYU's 4th straight conference win.
BYU would get a solid effort from the whole team, beating the Falcons at every aspect of the match. The match also saw BYU's Hanni Wittenbecher play in her first singles match of the year.
The day started out with some tough doubles play by the Cougars. At No. 1 doubles the freshman duo of Anastasia Sourkova and Jennifer Miccoli posted an 8-6 win while at No. 2 doubles Lauren Jones and Dolly Chang easily won 8-3. At No. 3 doubles Olga Boulytcheva and Sofia Holden are simply automatic. Their 8-1 victory gives them a perfect 12-0 doubles record.
The dominance continued on into singles. At No.1singles, Lauren Jones put her back into it and showed there was nothing to it, winning 6-1,6-3. From there BYU would sweep the falcons the rest of the way. At No. 2 Sourkova blasted her way to a 6-1,6-2 victory while Boulytcheva did much of the same 6-1,6-2. At No. 4 Sofia Holden's first match would end up being the tightest of the day but she still won in straight sets 7-5,6-1.
Then the Aussie, senior Rebecca Pike, gave BYU a 6-0 overall match lead going into the final singles match with her 6-0,6-1 win. At six singles, Hanni Wittenbecher who saw action for the first time this year, easily won 6-3,6-2 for her first win of the season.
BYU advances to 16-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference. BYU returns home to take on No. 40 San Diego State Friday at 10 a.m. followed by Saturday's match against No. 39 UNLV at the same time.
