PROVO -- The BYU men's volleyball team will host its inaugural alumni weekend Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7 and 8, which will include a match between the 2006 squad and a collection of former players, Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse.

The men's volleyball team became an NCAA sanctioned team in 1990 and has gone on to win three national championships in 1999, 2001 and 2004. The program started years prior as a club team in the early 1960s and dominated the club scene in the 1980s, winning three club national championships.

"It should be a great weekend," BYU head coach Tom Peterson said. "Some of the key players and coaches from the club and NCAA years that gave this program its foundation will be here. It will be a great opportunity for the fans to meet them and get a sneak peek at our current team."

Former players that may suit up for the Saturday night match include Fernando Pessoa (2001-04), Jon Alleman (2001-04), Mac Wilson (1998-01), Brad Goldston (1994-95, 1999-2000), Ingo Lindemann (1996-99) and Steve Heita (1991-93). Pessoa and Alleman were All-Americans and All-MPSF performers while Wilson, Lindeman and Goldston earned All-MPSF accolades.

The alumni weekend will begin on Friday, Oct. 8, with activities for the alumni that will include a dinner, speakers from each decade of the program, a video presentation and a memorabilia table.

Saturday morning there will be an alumni golf tournament at the Links at Sleepy Ridge. Later in the day at 4 p.m. alumni from all eras will form teams and play several matches before the feature match at 7 p.m. Fans are invited to attend the alumni matches and the feature match. Admission to the matches is free.
