PROVO -- A long list of Cougars won singles matches in Honolulu Friday at the 2006 Rainbow Wahine Invitational, but BYU's doubles woes continued as the team dropped three of four doubles matches for the second day in a row.
Not a single set went to a tiebreak in Friday's action as most of the BYU women's tennis team dominated its opponents. Sofia Holden came back after her loss on Thursday to knock out University of Hawaii's Kana Aikawa 6-1, 6-3 and Anastasia Sourkova beat UH's Jacqui Williams 6-3, 6-0. Freshman lefthander Chie Hayasaka also had a convincing win over Hawaii Pacific's Lauren Shin 6-1, 6-1.
"Chie is one of the smoothest recruits I've seen in a while," said BYU head coach Craig Manning. "She has the potential to be really good really fast."
Other Friday winners include Rana El Derwy, Jocelyn Jensen, Brianna Williamsen and Dolly Chang. Jensen and Williamsen rebounded after Thursday's doubles loss to handle Aleen Taylor and Theresa Holmes of BYU-Hawaii, 8-2.
The Cougars have seen some uncharacteristic doubles losses as the team of Jones and Holden as well as that of Sourkova and Miccoli remains winless at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Although they won their match Thursday, Hayasaka and Chang couldn't make it two in a row as they fell to Jing Jing Liu and Anna Anikanova of BYU-Hawaii, 8-4.
