Provo, Utah (October 14, 2006) -- With numerous opportunities to score throughout the game, Cougar senior Haylee Cuthbert netted the winning goal, defeating Air Force (3-9-3, 0-2-1), 1-0, in a physical battle between two conference foes.
"Our backs were against the wall in the first half, but I thought we responded well in the second half," BYU women's soccer head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We attacked more and created more opportunities and Haylee (Cuthbert) put in a big goal for us."
The lone goal came in the 65th minute on a free kick that was taken by Haylee Cuthbert. Her kick sailed into the goal off the goalie's fist into the back of the net.
BYU took 19 shots in the game and eight on goal. BYU had possession for nearly three quarters of the time, but Air Force played tough defense to keep the game close.
The Cougar's had several opportunities to score in the second period of action. One of those opportunities came with 5:53 left in the game with BYU looking for its second goal. Carolyn Swenson, who gave the Air Force defense trouble all night, crossed the ball to the left side for Katie Larkin. Larkin had a promising look at the net and fired a shot. Air Force goalkeeper Erin Wallace, who had seven saves on the night, made the quick reach to stop the point blank assault.
Air Force was tough on defense but their best chance to even the score was stolen by BYU goalkeeper, Erica Woodbury. In the 84th minute, Woodbury jumped on a pass to the left side of the goal box only feet from a would-be Air Force scorer.
Woodbury had two saves on the night to give her 45 saves on the season.
"I'm pleased at where we're at right now," Rockwood said. "We're playing some great soccer. We're just going to keep playing harder and battle through."
The Cougars takes on Wyoming Thursday, at South Field in Provo, Utah.
