PROVO -- BYU senior quarterback John Beck has been named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time this season. Beck became the Mountain West Conference career leader in passing and total offense after posting 313 yards and four touchdowns (two rushing) to lead the 25th ranked Cougars to a 55-7 victory over Wyoming and secure at least a share of the MWC Championship.
"John's statistics speak for themselves," BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "All he was missing was a championship, and with securing at least a share of that, I think it's time to acknowledge that he belongs with some of the great names at BYU. I'm extremely proud of him, not just because of the way he's leading the team and his passing, but with his approach with the team. I couldn't ask him to handle it any better."
Beck carved up the nation's fourth-ranked pass defense, connecting on 20-of-26 attempts for a completion percentage of 76.9. His efficiency rating of 203.4 marked the fourth time this season he has had a rating of over 200.
On the season Beck has thrown 22 touchdown completions, compared to just four interceptions. His +18 touchdown-to-interception margin is the highest since Brandon Doman had a margin of +25 during the 2001 season.
THIS WEEK'S QUOTES:
"I don't think you stop him ... he's going to get some yards. The guy's fantastic. He's a terrific quarterback. I don't know what to say. We got our ashes hauled." -- Joe Glenn, Wyoming Head Coach
"The passing game is where they (BYU) get it done. He (John Beck) has put BYU back on the map as the Quarterback Factory. This is the BYU I saw as a kid growing up." -- Chris Rix, Former Florida State Standout Quarterback and current CSTV analyst.
"It's almost like clockwork. John Beck does it every single time. He looks every bit the part of an All-American quarterback." -- Jonathan Coachman, CSTV
"They (Wyoming) knew they had to slow Brigham Young quarterback John Beck. They couldn't. " -- Peter Hockaday, Casper Star-Tribune
"When the Cougars didn't take advantage of a short field, it drove the length of it. No matter what BYU did, it worked. " -- Robert Gagliardi, Wyoming Tribune-Eagle
"The Cougars are looking as indestructible as Tupperware.... " -- Brad Rock, Deseret Morning News
"BYU is dominating the Mountain West like no team in the country is ruling any league this season. Personally, I would not be too eager to face these guys. " -- Kurt Kraghtorpe, Salt Lake Tribune
"By halftime, all of that (Wyoming) defense was in tatters when the Cougars already had 301 yards, including 269 via the air. At the end, after it had eased off the throttle, BYU had 454 yards, 313 through the air. The result utterly kicked in the onions the stupid notion that a good defense stops a good offense." -- Gordon Monson, Salt Lake Tribune
"The senior from Arizona performed surgery without a license on the Cowboys. Beck passed a storied All-American, one of college football's legendary quarterbacks. He passed the Pass Master, Jim McMahon. In the span of 11 minutes, Beck completed five of seven passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns and a pass-efficiency rating--at that stage of the game--of 308.51." -- Dick Harmon, Deseret Morning News
"What you saw out there (against Wyoming) is an arm that will make it in the NFL. With that arm, he makes those deep throws and that out pass get there so fast. It's tough to defend." -- Vai Sikahema, NBC Sportscaster and Former Philadelphia Eagle.
"John Beck is playing like a true champion. His performance on the field has improved each week. While his arm strength is second to none, his ability to read coverage's and get the ball to the right people has made him one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. John continues to carry on the great tradition of quarterbacks at BYU." -- Robbie Bosco, 1984 National Champion Quarterback
"If Wyoming really is the second-best team in the Mountain West Conference, the gap between No. 1 and the rest of the league is a considerable one. Like, the size of the Grand Canyon, maybe. A showdown of the MWC's top two teams turned into a beatdown on Thursday night ... In between was the 'John Beck Show' against the nation's No. 4 pass defense." -- Darnell Dickson, Daily Herald
"John's statistics speak for themselves. All he was missing was a championship, and with securing at least a share of that, I think it's time to acknowledge that he belongs with some of the great names at BYU. I'm extremely proud of him, not just because of the way he's leading the team and his passing, but with his approach with the team. I couldn't ask him to handle it any better." -- Bronco Mendenhall, BYU Head Coach
