Mitch Payne Q&A

How does it feel to practice in full pads again?

It feels good. It's just as physical when we are in our shorts as when we are in our full pads; it doesn't make that big of a difference for the kickers.

How do you feel about the new rule for kickoff being five yards back?

I'm excited. I think it will give each team a new chance. I think you will definitely be able to tell the difference between the teams that have good kickers and the teams that have good return men. I think it will make a big difference that way.

How does it feel to come to BYU after your brother, Matt Payne, was so successful here?

I think it is exciting. When he was here I was his biggest fan, and right now he is my biggest fan. We work a lot together on different techniques and we talk a lot.

What is the best advice he has given you?

Do enough things right and the end result will be what you want it to be.

What can we expect from you this year?

A very good, consistent season.

In a few words, how would you describe Coach Mendenhall?

I would say he is kind of intimidating, strong and spiritual.

You played soccer before football. When did you start playing soccer?

I started playing when I was age four.

When did you start playing football?

I was a junior in high school. I just went out and kicked with my brother a few times. I enjoyed it and I was pretty good at it, so I decided to give it a try.
