PROVO -- Five different BYU women's soccer players scored against the Dixie State College Rebels Monday night for a 5-0 win in the Cougars' only exhibition game before the start of the regular season.
"The girls were really excited to play tonight and they have really been working hard," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said after the game. "The Dixie squad came out strong and battled us, but I was extremely pleased with the way all of our girls played tonight. I am looking forward to being even better than we were last year."
Fifteen minutes into the first half, junior Katie Fellows crossed the ball from the right side of the field to the left to senior Carolyn Swenson for a left-footed goal to the opposite post to break the nil-nil tie. Dixie State attempted a quick equalizer, but senior goalkeeper Erika Woodbury thwarted the threat by cleaning up the only shot on goal for Dixie State in the game.
Freshman Kassidy Christensen gave the Cougars a 2-nil lead with 2:38 to go in the first half after rebounding her own shot that hit off Rebel-goalkeeper Suzanne Hunt's chest. At the end of the first half, BYU had outshot Dixie State 15-1, and tallied four corner kicks.
Three minutes into the second half, Sophomore Ashleigh Jameson passed the ball to Swenson for a one-touch pass over the middle. Fellows literally rose to the occasion and scored the Cougars' third goal of the day with a header into the back of the net.
Dixie State's Robyn Wall was assessed a yellow card for a foul against Hermann Trophy candidate Katie Larkin just outside the 18-foot line with 37 minutes to go in the game. Larkin capitalized on the opportunity and a direct-kick assist from Swenson to score the fourth goal of the game, which went through the defensive line and just past the inside post.
Sophomore Whitney Feller became the fifth Cougar to score on the night with 20 minutes left in the game on a laser from 25 feet out that soared untouched over Hunt's head into the back of the net.
After 90 minutes, BYU had recorded 23 shots, eight on goal, and 12 corner kicks. Dixie State's only shot of the game was on goal, and they had no corner kicks.
The 2007 BYU women's soccer regular-season schedule begins Friday, Aug. 31 at Michigan State, with the home opener slated for Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. against Long Beach State.
