Holden Earns Athlete of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS -- Freshman Sofia Holden, native of Mexico City, Mexico, for the first time this season was named Co-MWC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after clinching both weekend wins for the Cougars against Denver and Kansas.

At the No. 2 singles spot for the Cougars, Holden had two come-from-behind wins over Kansas and Denver last weekend to clinch both wins for BYU. On Friday, against Kansas, Holden rallied from behind in her first set and took the second set. Holden's win over Emily Haylock of Kansas clinched the match for the Cougars (7-0). She also had a key win in doubles play to help BYU win the doubles point early in the match.

On Saturday, BYU was tied 2-2 in the match against Denver. Holden pulled off an amazing victory over Suzana Maksovic (No. 60) late in the match to clinch the 5-2 win for the Cougars. Holden was down in the first set, 4-0 but rallied back to win that set. She dropped the second set but, again, came from behind to win the third set in a 6-4 decision.

Holden's two match-winning victories give the Cougars a 7-2 record on the season.
