PROVO, Utah -- Junior quarterback Riley Nelson connected with freshman tight end Bryan Sampson on a two-point conversion attempt in overtime to give the White team an 18-17 victory in the Blue/White scrimmage Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Senior running back JJ Di Luigi put the Blue team on the board first in overtime with a 17-yard touchdown run on a third-and-two, giving Blue a 17-10 advantage after sophomore kicker Justin Sorensen converted on the extra-point attempt.

However, after converting a fourth-and-four, the White team evened the score on a 15-yard touchdown run by Nelson, setting up the two-point conversion attempt.

Nelson led the White squad offense, going 8-for-11 for 149 yards. He also added nine carries for 33 yards and a touchdown. Sampson had three catches for 30 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Jake Heaps led the Blue squad, going 16-of-21 for 126 yards. Di Luigi recorded 20 yards on seven carries including one touchdown while adding three receptions for 16 yards. Senior wide receiver McKay Jacobson caught four passes for 31 yards.

Defensive back Daniel Sorensen recorded five tackles and two pass breakups for the White defense in the secondary. Defensive linemen Eathyn Manumaleuna added five tackles and shared sack honors for the game with fellow lineman Travis Tuiloma with two sacks each.

Chase Pendley, a sophomore defensive back, posted five tackles for the Blue squad.

Both defenses held strong throughout the first half of the game. In the second quarter, the Blue defense held the White team on a fourth-and-one from the 13-yard line as freshman linebacker Sae Tautu stuffed Nelson on a quarterback sneak to give the ball back to the Blue offense.

With just under nine minutes left in the third quarter, freshman defensive back Jordan Johnson of the Blue team picked off a pass by White quarterback James Lark after junior linebacker Austen Jorgensen tipped the ball. Johnson went sideline to sideline before taking the ball up the field for a 25-yard touchdown, putting the Blue team ahead, 7-0.

After a field goal from Sorensen to put the Blue squad up 10-0, sophomore wide receiver Rhen Brown caught an 73-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to bring White within three points.

On the first play for the Blue offense after the touchdown, the snap was mishandled and White’s Tuiloma recovered the ball on the 11-yard line, giving the White squad a short field. The White offense could only manage a yard on the ensuing drive, setting up a 27-yard field goal by Sorensen to tie the game, 10-10, with 12:35 remaining in the fourth quarter.

With 34 seconds remaining in the game, kicker Justin Sorensen’s 37-yard field goal attempt was wide right, forcing overtime.
