Postgame notes
BYU lost to Washington 31-16, falling to 8-5 this season, 13-18-1 in bowl games and 538-393-26 overall. The loss snapped a four-game bowl win streak under coach Bronco Mendenhall. His bowl record at BYU is now 6-3.
The Cougars are now 8-3 this year when earning more total yards on offense. BYU tallied 473, while Washington picked up 319 total yards. The Cougar defense held the Huskies to almost 200 yards under their season average of 514.3 yards per game.
Jason Munns and Logan Taele carried the team and special teams flags, respectively. Former linebacker Shay Muirbrook (1993-96) carried the alumni flag. Muirbrook, a Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame member, holds the NCAA record for most sacks (6) in a bowl game (earned in the 1996 Cotton Bowl).
Official attendance for the game was 34,136.
Taysom Hill
Sophomore quarterback Taysom Hill finished with 133 rushing yards to pass Eldon Fortie for the most rushing yards in a career by a BYU QB (1,680). He recorded his sixth game of the season with at least 100 yards rushing. He now holds the record for most rushing yards and rushing attempts (31) in a single bowl game in BYU history. The sophomore finishes the season ranked No. 3 for most rushing yards in a season in school history with 1,344.
Cody Hoffman
Senior receiver Cody Hoffman broke the school record for most 100+ yard receiving games in a career with 18. He passes Austin Collie’s record of 17 games. He tallied at least 100 yards receiving in each of the four bowl games of his career. He also passed Curtis Brown for the most all-purpose yards in school history with 5,015 during the Fight Hunger Bowl. The senior finished his career with 43 consecutive games with at least one reception.
Brett Thompson
Junior Brett Thompson caught a career-high three receptions in the game.
Daniel Sorensen
Senior defensive back Daniel Sorensen rushed the ball for the first time in his BYU career on a fourth-down play at the end of the first quarter. He also finished with five total tackles.
Robertson Daniel
Junior defensive back Robertson Daniel notched his second consecutive game with an interception, his second of the season.
Justin Sorensen
Senior kicker Justin Sorensen kicked three field goals. His 45-yard kick in the second quarter was his season high. The field goal is the longest scored by the Cougars in a bowl game. His 21 field goals this year are the most in one season in school history, previously held by Owen Pochman (1998) and Ethan Pochman (1996) with 20.
