Fishburn tied for third, Cougars in seventh after day one

FAIRFAX, Calif. – BYU men’s golf ended the first day of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Meadow Club in seventh place, Monday.

“We made a lot of birdies during the first round,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “The second round was a little out of the ordinary. We had six or seven double bogies, and we were getting bigger numbers. We finished the second round a little sloppy which means we need to come out tomorrow and see if we can put a good score together and have a nice finish.”

The Cougars finished 36 holes of play shooting 17-under-par. West Coast Conference foes St. Mary’s and Pepperdine lead the 15-team playing field at 24-under-par. San Francisco is also representing  the WCC and is in 15th place.

BYU was tied for third place after shooting 270 (-14) throught the first 18 holes. After the second round, the team finished shooting 281 (-3) for a combined score of 551 (-17) to drop down to seventh place at the end of the first day.

Junior Patrick Fishburn leads the team, finishing both the first and second rounds at five-under-par for a total score of 132 (-10). He is tied for third place overall.

Spencer Dunaway came away shooting four-under-par after 36 holes to find himself tied for 23rd place. Rhett Rasmussen is tied for 38th place as he shot one-under-par.

Rounding out the team, Peter Kuest shot an even par 142, ending the day in a tie for 45th. Shooting two-over-par, CJ Lee is in a tie for 58th place.

“If we can get out tomorrow and hit some birdies, we could win this tournament,” coach Brockbank said. “We would have to finish shooting at least 15 or 20-under-par to have a chance, but I think we’re very capable of doing that.”
