FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Four members of the BYU men’s dive team were finalists in the 3-meter event at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships on Tuesday.
“I’m proud that four of our Cougars made the top 16 during prelims,” head BYU diving coach Tyce Routson said. “Kevin Dreesen placed well, Matt Denkers did some great dives and Eric Muir showed some flashiness and brilliance in his performances. Trayton Speth did well for himself and made finals for his first time at this competition."
Dreesen was the top finalist for the men’s dive team, placing 12th in the 3-meter finals with a combined prelims/final score of 658.85. Denkers followed in 14th place with a total of 606.20 points.
Speth and Muir seeded 16th and 18th place, respectively, with Speth scoring 585.10 points and Muir accumulating 540.30.
Ryan Evans and Jordan Tuckfield participated in the preliminary events but were just shy of attaining finalist positions. Evans ended with 244.40 points and Tuckfield had a score of 237.90.
"Morgan Mellow stayed steady and improved her standing in the 1-meter event against several talented women," Routson said. "She keeps coming along and her platform should be her best chance to place in the top 20.”
Mellow built on her 3-meter dive performance from Monday and placed 35th in the 1-meter preliminaries today. She ended the event with 223.70 total points, just a few points away from her BYU record of 228.83.
The last day of events will be tomorrow, with the women’s platform preliminary beginning at 11 a.m. MST and the men’s platform prelims starting at 3:50 p.m. MST. Live stats can be found at DiveMeets.com and daily results can be found on the BYU swim and dive homepage.
