Cougars solidify regional-qualifying times

LOS ANGELES – BYU track and field had athletes earn potential regional-qualifying times at the Mt. SAC Relays, Beach Invite and Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday.

Mt. SAC Relays

Late Thursday night, All-American Clayson Shumway ran the seventh-best 10,000m in school history with a time of 28:36.07. Shumway also holds the No. 7 mark all-time at BYU in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. He now has potential regional-qualifying times in both the 3000m steeplechase and 10,000m.

Michael Bluth ran a career-best 46.50 in the men’s 400m to better his regional-qualifying position. Ellie Heiden Quackenbush and Lauren Rawlinson both ran season bests in the 400m with times of 54.81 and 56.03, respectively.

Colten Yardley earned a potential regional-qualifying time in the 400m hurdles after clocking a time of 51.75. In the women’s 100m hurdles, Kaitlyn Gunnerson-Burrup earned a personal record with a time of 14.16.

Rickey Fantroy Jr. put himself in position to potentially qualify for the 2019 NCAA West Prelims in the triple jump with a mark of 15.11m/49-7. Jake Peister also had a season-best 14.93m/48-11.75 in the triple jump.

The Cougars swept the men’s discus with Jefferson Jarvis taking first overall on a toss of 52.24m/171-05. Jacob Foutz finished second with a throw of 52.13m/171-00 and Harrison Gould placed third earned a season-best 50.43m/165-05.

Bryan Clay Invitational

Whittni Orton improved her position as No. 4 on the BYU all-time record board with a career-record 4:14.02. Anna Camp-Bennett ran a 4:15.15 for the fifth-fastest time in school history. Orton, Camp-Bennett and Kate Hunter (4:22.22) improved their regional-qualifying positions. Due to late start times, the remaining women’s 1500m will be covered in Saturday’s recap. Results can be found before then on finishedresults.com.

Talem Franco ran 3:42.51 in the 1500m for the No. 9 mark all-time at BYU. Franco, Marcus Dickson (3:43.56), Matt Owens (3:44.25), Kenneth Rooks (3:44.44) and Patrick Parker (3:44.50) all finished with times that put them in contention to qualify for the NCAA West Prelims.

Karina Haymore clocked 2:07.51 for a personal best in the women’s 800m to bolster a BYU women’s 800m squad that is ranked No. 1 in the country by the USTFCCCA. Her time puts her in a better position to potentially qualify for regionals.

Beach Invite

Freshman Cameron Bates solidified his regional-qualifying position in the javelin with a career-best toss of 69.17m/226-11. The mark also improves his hold on the seventh-best javelin throw in BYU history. In the women’s javelin, Sydnie Martindale and Payge Cuthbertson had marks of 46.15m/151-5 and 42.47m/139-04, respectively.

Foutz threw for over 60 meters for the fourth consecutive week in the men’s hammer. In the Beach Invite, he had a mark of 62.81m/206-1. Sable Lohmeier had a toss of 49.73m/163-02 in the women’s hammer.
