PROVO, Utah — BYU’s swim and dive teams competed against Air Force this weekend at the Richards Building pool, with the meet beginning on Friday evening and resuming Saturday morning. 

Friday

The women’s team started off Friday night’s competition with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. A team of Brynn Sproul, Katie McBratney, Liza Slade and Halli Williams took first in the event with a time of 1:44.56.

McBratney continued to secure wins throughout the evening, taking first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:05.50 and also the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.65. Williams then won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.00, and Regan Geldmacher took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.65. 

Rivers Johnson swam an exhibition in the 100-yard backstroke, recording the top score of that event with a 57.13. An exhibition swim from a team of Sproul, Emma Colvin, Williams and McBratney recorded the top time in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a 3:32.00.

The men’s team also started the evening with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. A team of Isaac Hajek, Brad Prolo, Tony Puertas and Roger Woods took first with a time of 1:30.54.

Tanner Nelson set two pool records on Friday night with his wins in the 500- and 200-yard freestyle events, recording times of 4:27.57 and 1:38.38 respectively.

Javier Nicolas Matta won the 200-yard IM, swimming a time of 1:51.66. Brigham Harrison won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.47. Prolo took first in the 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke, recording times of 1:50.74 and 56.38 respectively.

Diego Camacho swam an exhibition in the 100-yard backstroke and recorded the top time for that event with a 50.32. An exhibition swim from a team of Matta, Woods, Harrison and Stirling earned the top time in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a 2:59.58.

The Cougars took first in both diving events on Friday night. Kennedy Cribbs won the women’s three-meter dive with a score of 305.85, while Mickey Strauss won the men’s one-meter dive with a score of 346.50.

Saturday

The Cougars kept their momentum on Saturday. The women’s team started off the morning with a win in the 400-yard medley relay, with Sproul, McBratney, Ashley Catchpole and Williams recording a time of 3:53.02.

McBratney then took first in the 400-yard IM with a 4:32.39, and Sproul took first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.61. Abi Furqueron won the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:23.97.

This weekend’s meet marked the first time the 1650-yard freestyle event was competed at the Richards Building Pool, and Geldmacher’s 17:42.11 win set a pool record for the event. 

An exhibition swim from a relay team of Williams, Emma Colvin, Anna Despain-Jensen and Rachel Oyler earned the top time in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 1:37.16.

The men’s team also started off with a win in the 400-yard medley relay. BYU’s team of Camacho, Prolo, Matta and Stirling took first in the race with a time of 3:22.17.

Harrison took first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.32, and Camacho won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.20. Matta won the 200-yard breaststroke, swimming a 2:03.63.

Nelson won the 400-yard IM with a time of 3:59.54, and then set the men’s pool record in the 1650-yard freestyle with his 15:59.02 exhibition swim in the event.

An exhibition swim from a relay team of Harrison, Matta, Woods and Stirling earned the top time in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 1:21.64.

BYU divers won both diving events again on Saturday. Cribbs took first in the women’s one-meter dive with a score of 302.25, while Strauss won the men’s three-meter dive with a 369.90.

The Cougars’ next meet will take place on Friday, Jan. 21 at the Richards Building Pool. BYU will face Colorado Mesa and Denver at 2 p.m. MST.
