SALT LAKE CITY, UT. — Jacque Dunyon and Bobo Huang secured their spots at the fall nationals as BYU women's tennis wrapped up a successful ITA Mountain Regional Championships.
The dynamic duo of Dunyon and Huang clinched a berth in the ITA Fall Championships with a decisive victory over Andrea Beltran and Britt Pursell from DU, scoring 6-1, 6-4. This marks the second consecutive year that the Cougars have sent a doubles team to the fall championships. Last year, Emilee Astle and Huang represented the team. The championships are set to take place in San Diego, CA, beginning on November 2.
Huang also embarked on a deep run in the singles bracket, progressing all the way to the semifinals before her run was halted.
"Wow, what a fantastic week. This was our strongest showing at regionals since I took over as head coach," said head coach Holly Hasler. "Jacque and Bobo secured their tickets to the fall nationals by dominating in the doubles. Bobo displayed resilience in the singles draw, reaching the semi-finals and narrowly missing out in a hard-fought three-setter. The best part is the lessons we've learned, the camaraderie among the girls, and the takeaways for our continued improvement. I truly admire this team and their unwavering determination. We just keep getting better."
In the singles competition, No. 1 Bobo Huang (4-1), No. 9 Jacque Dunyon (1-1), Kendall Kovick (1-1), and Tina Li (2-1) all participated in the main draw. Maddy Smith (3-1), Kara Wheatley (4-1), and Avery Pope (0-1) were in the B draw.
In the doubles category, No. 1 Dunyon and Huang (5-0), and Kovick/Wheatley (3-1) teamed up for doubles play.
