Women's swim and dive opens weekend at Denver, UCLA

BYU women’s swim and dive completed its opening day of weekend competition at two meets in Denver, Colorado and Los Angeles, California on Friday.

PROVO, Utah BYU women’s swim and dive completed its opening day of weekend competition at two meets in Denver, Colorado and Los Angeles, California on Friday.

Swimming Recap

Each of BYU’s relay squads finished top-3 on day one in a tri-meet versus Denver and Wyoming at El Pomar Natatorium.

“We raced well after coming off a hard winter training trip,” said BYU head swimming coach Shari Skabelund. “Our athletes are tired, but continue to find ways to improve.”

Annie Reichner, Mackenzie Lung, Tahis Ibáñez and Halli Williams teamed-up to take third at 1:42.38 in the 200 medley relay. Williams then returned to the pool to lead off the 400 free relay and finish third at 3:24.78 with Lily Flint, Julia Bartell and Emma Marusakova.

Addison Richards finished third for the Cougars in both the 400 individual medley and 200 breast. Richards clocked 4:29.29 in the 400 IM, then 2:19.54 in the 200 breast. Megan Bergstrom posted BYU’s third top-3 individual finish of the day as she took third in the 500 free at 5:03.68.

Rachel Ballard and Mia Tandingan both recorded personal bests in the 100 fly. Ballard cut nearly 1.5 seconds off her previous best to go 58.53 while Tandingan followed closely at 58.95.

BYU looks to finish strong when competition resumes in Denver on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. MST.

Diving Recap

BYU women’s diving faced athletes from five top-25 ranked teams in the Bruin Diving Invitational at UCLA’s Spieker Aquatic Center in Los Angeles on Friday.

“Today, we faced the best competition all season,” said BYU head diving coach Tyce Routson. “Team event was a great addition and helps us prepare for the Big 12 Championships. We added some new dives in their first officially scored event and I was pleased with our results.”

Alexia Jackson showed out for the Cougars with a 251.95 in the 1-meter preliminary event followed by a 13th-place finish with a total of 512.45.

While coming up short of the finals, Brooklyn Larson, Sophia DeBergh and Aubryn Ordyna rounded out BYU’s scoring for the day. After Friday’s action, BYU has a team score of 263.8 and stands in fourth.

Saturday will see the Cougars compete on the 3-meter with prelims at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 12:30 p.m. PST.
