LIHUʻE, Kauaʻi – BYU men’s golf is tied for 11th at 287 after the first 18 at John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala.
“We never really got any momentum today like we did last year,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “I think our guys were just a little off. We hit some good shots early, but the big challenge was the finishing holes into the wind. Coming down the stretch, we had some great opportunities and great shots but didn’t capitalize. Making a few of those putts down the stretch would have helped, but we need a big day tomorrow.”
Senior Zac Jones sits in a tie for 12th individually at a 3-under, 69. Jones carded four birdies and an eagle on hole four, a 506-yard par five.
Keanu Akina is tied for 34th at 1-under-par, with Cooper Jones at 1-over par in a tie for 62nd. Max Brenchley (74; +2) and Peter Kim (75; +3) round out the Cougar squad.
Brock Goyen, who is playing as an individual, currently sits tied for 70th at 2-over-par.
"As you can see by the team scores, the whole field had a tougher time on the course today than they did last year," BYU director of golf Todd Miller said. "The wind direction was out of the north, which makes some of those key holes tougher. Our guys are resilient and will find a way to get back in contention tomorrow."
The Cougars will continue with round 2 tomorrow with an 8:30 am HST shotgun start. Scoring can be found at SmartGolf.
