PROVO, Utah — BYU swim and dive will be represented by five current, former and future athletes at the U.S. Swimming and Diving Olympic Team Trials June 15-23.
See below for meet schedule details.
Current BYU swimmer Jordan Tiffany, recently graduated swimmer Brad Prolo and diver Mickey Strauss, former swimmer Payton Sorenson and incoming freshman Lucy Warnick will each compete for a spot in Paris.
"We are super proud of our BYU family for qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Swimming and Diving Team Trials," said BYU swimming and diving head coach Tamber McAllister. "These athletes have continued to set a standard of excellence in our program for many to follow. We are excited to watch and support them as they have the opportunity to represent BYU at one of the most elite meets in the world."
Tiffany earned his spot at the swimming trials with a personal-best 53.39 in the 100 fly (long course meters) at the Sun Devil Open in Tempe, Arizona on May 19. The Pleasant Grove native looks to continue his breakout season after a Big 12 individual championship, two Honorable Mention All-America finishes and five broken BYU school records in 2024.
Prolo punched his ticket to his second-career Olympic Trials with a 2:00.43 in the 200 fly at the Toyota U.S. Open in Greensboro, North Carolina on Dec. 2. The San Clemente, California native clocked 1:03.73 to finish 45th in the 100 breast while competing for a spot in Tokyo at the 2021 trials. Prolo’s 2024 senior season at BYU included two NCAA Championship entries, a Big 12 200 fly title, three all-conference honors and two broken school records.
Strauss will represent the Cougars at the diving trials with a spot in the 3-meter competition. The two-time All-Big 12 diver recorded an Olympic Trial-qualifying 409.15 on the 3-meter at the Big 12 Championships on Feb. 29. Strauss, who hails from Provo, took 31st with a 244.50 on 3-meter at the 2021 trials.
Sorenson swam for BYU in 2013 and again 2016-19 following a two-year full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York City. The seven-time NCAA Championships qualifier clocked 23.06 to win the Arizona SAC Cactus Classic on May 27 and book his second trip to the trials. Sorenson’s 2021 trials showing included a sixth-place finish in the 50 free with a personal-best 22.08.
The Cougars’ lone female swimmer at Olympic Trials has yet to don a BYU uniform. Warnick signed with BYU in November 2023 out of Palo Verde High School and the Sandpipers of Nevada in Las Vegas. The incoming freshman completed her path to trials with a personal-best 2:31.00 in the 200 breast at the 2024 California MVN Fran Crippen meet in Mission Viejo on April 14.
BYU swim and dive has qualified 22 athletes all-time on Olympic teams. The last such Cougar athletes to compete for Team USA did so at the Athens Summer Games in 2004 with divers Justin Wilcock and Rachelle Kunkel.
U.S. Olympic Team Swimming and Diving Trials will stream live on Peacock with finals airing live on NBC. Preliminary rounds will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT each day, with semifinals and finals 8-10 p.m. Access results here.
