Bryant Takes Fourth In Shot Put at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. — BYU thrower Danny Bryant took fourth in the shot put at the 2024 National Championships at Hayward Field Wednesday night with a throw of 20.02-meters/65-8.25.

Bryant placed fourth in the nation in the shot put with his final throw of 20.02m/65-8.25. This earned him First Team All-American honors in his first nationals' outing after coming up short of qualifying in 2022 and 2023.  Bryant moved to No. 3 all-time in the BYU records with Wednesday night's effort. The last Cougar to throw over the 20-meter barrier was Jim Roberts in 2000 with a 20.09m/65-11 throw.

Senior thrower Cameron Bates finished eighth overall in the javelin with a 72.09m/236-6 toss. Bates became a three-time First Team All-American with his placement. 

Sophomore 3000m steeplechase runner James Corrgian qualified for the finals by taking first in his heat with the day's fastest time at 8:28.84 He achieved a new personal best in the process, surpassing his prior time of 8:29.24. The Big 12 Champion and conference record-holder in the event moves up his time to the No. 3 all-time spot in BYU history. 

True freshman Wyatt Haughton ran 9:00.96 in the steeplechase semi-final round to earn All-American Honorable Mention status with is 22nd placement in the field. 

Junior mid-distance runner Sebastian Fernandez ran 1:49.43 in the 800m semi-final round. He placed 20th overall to earn an Honorable Mention All-America citation. 

The BYU 4x400m relay team also earned Honorable Mention All-America status as they ran 3:07.46 to finish in 18th.

It was an amazing feeling to go over that 20-meter barrier. Going in, I had gone to regionals every year and felt I choked the past two years. When I made it to nationals this year, I was just psyched and ready to bring everything I had. It felt amazing tonight.”

After struggling on his first two attempts, he was able to throw a new personal best to put himself into seventh and be able to get three more throws.
