LIHUʻE, Kauaʻi – BYU men’s golf is tied for ninth after the second round of play at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala.

“Hokuala played tough today,” BYU director of golf Todd Miller said. “The average team score today was around eight over par, which is pretty high considering we shot -17 on average each round last year. The guys fought hard to shoot 4-over, which is respectable. We are due for a low round. The guys will be ready to play tomorrow!”

Keanu Akina fired off a score of 3-under-par at 68, which ties for the third-lowest score in the second round. His four birdies and lone eagle helped him jump to a tie for seventh at 4-under-par for the tournament.

Zac Jones is also tied for seventh at 4-under as he finished with a 71 in Friday’s round with four birdies.

“Keanu played a great round out there today,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “I would suspect he was close to the low round today. After a slow start for Zac, he played some solid golf in challenging conditions for most of the day. The wind was blowing 20-30 miles per hour, which made parts of the course extremely difficult. We need our best round in the final round to have a decent finish.”

Brock Goyen, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 31st at 1-over-par for the tournament, with a second round of 71. Peter Kim (75-74–149; +5), Cooper Jones (73-78–151; +7) and Max Brenchley (74-79–153; +9) round out the Cougar squad.

The Cougars will finish the tournament with the final 18 holes tomorrow with an 8:30 am HST shotgun start. Scoring can be found at SmartGolf
