Cougar dive teams finish 1-2 at Air Force Invitational

BYU men’s and women’s dive teams finished first and second, respectively, as the Air Force Diving Invitational came to a close at Cadet Natatorium on Saturday.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — BYU men’s and women’s dive teams finished first and second, respectively, as the Air Force Diving Invitational came to a close at Cadet Natatorium on Saturday.

"The whole team performed great and our consistency was at a higher level than we've seen all year," said BYU head dive coach Tyce Routson. "We look forward to carrying this momentum forward into our dual meet at Utah and on to Big 12 Championships."

The Cougars used a strong platform performance on Saturday to put them over the top with a winning 118 points.

Each of BYU’s four platform divers advanced to the final with Chase Hindmarsh leading the way at 366 points and a third-place finish. Hindmarsh’s 366 was enough to overtake Mario Del Valle of Cal Baptist and Deacon Colbert of Missouri for the top three spot. Hindmarsh finished platform competition on Saturday just over five points off a personal best.

Marti Llop, Bryce Roper and Ezra Purcell took spots eight through 10 on platform with Roper recording a personal-best 289.25, an improvement of over 70 points from his previous 216.1 in November.

Llop’s springboard performances consisted of a runner-up spot on 3-meter and fourth-place finish on 1-meter. The 3-meter competition saw Llop post 323.90 points and finish behind only the Lancers’ Del Valle and ahead of the Tigers’ Tommaso Zannella and Collier Dyer.

Purcell notched a personal-best 301.10 on 3-meter to take fifth.

In the team event, BYU finished first at 348.05 with an advantage of 40 points over Denver. 

Women’s Recap

BYU women’s dive finished in second, just four points behind Missouri, with a top-five finish from Alexia Jackson Hansen and two sixth-place spots credited to Brooklyn Larson Clouse.

Jackson Hansen scored 278.20 on 1-meter to finish in fourth while Brooklyn Larson Clouse also reached the 1-meter final and took sixth at 258.35. Larson Clouse followed that up on Friday with a 277.65 on 3-meter.

Sophia DeBergh gave the Cougars their best platform finish on Saturday with a 216.75. Aubryn Ordyna also advanced to the platform final and came in ninth at 210.75.

In the team event, BYU took first at 264.10 over Colorado Mesa's 257.8. 

BYU swim and dive combines for the program’s final regular season meet in the annual rivalry meet with Utah Feb. 7-8 at Ute Natatorium in Salt Lake City.
