PROVO, Utah – No. 71 BYU men’s tennis goes on the road to begin Big 12 play this weekend. The Cougars’ first stop is Thursday in Stillwater, Oklahoma to take on Oklahoma State, then they will head to Lubbock, Texas to face No. 69 Texas Tech.

BYU Notes

  • BYU moved up four spots in the most recent rankings released on March 11. This is coming on the heels of a 4-2 win against LMU to finish their non-conference play.
  • The Cougars are 11-2, which is their best non-conference start since the 2018-2019 season. 
  • Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs are ranked No. 81, posting a 12-4 record this season.
  • BYU has only lost one away match this year, posting a 5-1 record in away matches.
  • As Big 12 play begins, the Cougars are the eighth-highest ranked team in the conference, which is where they were voted in the preseason poll. They are tied for the second best winning percentage at 0.846.

Oklahoma State Notes

  • Oklahoma State's head coach, Dustin Taylor, is in his fourth season with the team. Sergey Avdeyev, the Cowboys' associate head coach, is in his first season.
  • The Cowboys are 5-8 on the season but are currently on a three-match win streak.
  • In the Big 12 preseason poll, Oklahoma State was ranked fifth out of nine teams. However, the Cowboys have fallen and now rank last in the national rankings.
  • Nicolas Kobelt and Alessio Basile are ranked No. 48 as they are 5-1 on their season.

  • Head coach Michael Breler is in his second season since being named head coach on May 12, 2023. He is assisted by Parker Wynn who enters his second season as the assistant coach and third with the team. Wynn also played for the Red Raiders tennis team from 2018-21.
  • Texas Tech is 9-5 on its season and is on a two-match winning streak of late.
  • Texas Tech was picked seventh in the preseason poll and sits in that position in the national rankings.
  • Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak are ranked No. 80 in the nation with an 8-7 record.
