27 New Cougars compete in Arizona and California

BYU men's and women's track and field saw impressive outings in its first weekend in the outdoor season which featured returning program veterans and true freshmen.

PROVO, Utah – The Cougars had 27 freshmen in addition to returning athletes compete at the Willie Williams Classic and Aztec Invitational.

Willie Williams Saturday Recap

The men’s 110-meter hurdles saw all three Cougars run under 14.80 with senior Riley Hunt leading the charge with a fifth-place performance in 14.30. Hunt’s fellow freshmen Garrett Copelin and Jayden Jesse each debuted with a 14.65 and 14.79 outings, respectively. 

Lindsey Middleton set a new personal best of 14.01 in the 100m hurdles. The senior from Provo, Utah placed fifth overall in the field. Freshman Remy Romney also ran under 15 seconds with a debut of 14.92 for 13th place. 

Paje Rasmussen clocked a personal best of 11.75 in the women’s 100m. The sophomore placed ninth overall in the field. 

Emily Ellis-Dalley placed seventh in the 400m with a new outdoor personal best of 55.21. A couple hours later, she followed it up with another personal best in the 100m with a time of 12.02.

Senior Dallin Draper returned to the starting line of the 100m Saturday afternoon. Draper secured a 10.54 finishing time and placed seventh overall. It marks the first meet back since last year as the sprinter did not compete in the indoor season due to injury. 

The throws group saw Danny Bryant lead the men with an 18.22m/59-9.5 mark in the shot put. Freshmen Peyton Williams and Tyler Poole each debuted in the event with 16.39m/53-9.25 and ​​15.43m/50-7.5 respective marks. 

Gretchen Hoekstre led the women’s throws group with a third-place finish in the discus with a throw of 54.02m/177-2. 

 

Aztec Invitational Saturday Recap

Cortnie Barker won the women’s high jump to kickoff the action in California for the Cougars The freshman from Syracuse, Utah cleared 1.67m/5-5.75. Barker’s highest jump at BYU is 1.74m/5-8.5 achieved Jan. 10 at the BYU Cougar Indoor Invitational.

New freshman Kaden Passey and sophomore Jaden Roskelley represented the men’s combined event group. Passey took eighth overall in the 400m with a 49.33 finishing time. Roskelley took third overall in the 110m hurdles with a 14.77 outing. 

Combined event athlete Zoey Bonds returned to the track after redshirting the 2025 indoor season. Bonds placed second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.19 and returned a couple hours later to set a new personal best of 25.65 in the 200m.

Hayden Gribble debuted in the javelin and high jump Saturday. The freshmen threw a 53.45m/175-4 mark in the throws event. He later cleared 1.92m/6-3.5 in the high jump. 

Maren Garnett and Rebekah Erikson placed second and third in the women’s pole vault with clearances of 4.17m/13-8.25 and 4.07m/13-4.25, respectively. 

Ethan Amata represented the men in the event, with a clearance of 4.97m/16-3.5.
