PROVO, UT – BYU head coach Lee Cummard announced the hiring of Andrew Curtis as the Cougars’ newest assistant coach on Thursday afternoon.
“Andrew brings a wealth of experience at the grassroots level of basketball,” said Cummard. “He has coached great teams and helped develop elite players over his many years in the coaching profession. He’s a basketball addict and eats, sleeps and breathes hoops. We are very glad he wanted to join our program and help it be great.”
Curtis comes to BYU with a wealth of experience coaching at the highest levels of Arizona high school basketball. “My family has a deep love for the game of basketball, and I cannot think of a better community and head coach who shares the same love and passion for basketball as Coach Cummard,” said Curtis. “Lee is BYU and I am pumped to represent him and carry out his vision and commitment to excellence as we seek to make an impact on the court in the BYU community.”
While at Perry, Curtis helped 10 players achieve their goals of playing basketball at the collegiate level, including the 2023 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year and Vanderbilt junior Khamil Pierre, who was ranked a four-star recruit by ESPN.com and named a McDonald’s All-American nominee. He also coached Madison Conner, who would go on to lead the NCAA in 2024-25 with 128 made threes and be selected by the Seattle Storm with the 28th pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.
In his nine years as the head man for Perry High, all nine of his teams earned the AIA Scholar Team Award, a recognition awarded to teams that carry a team GPA of 3.5 or higher. While at Perry, he coached in the program that produced NBA Champion Jalen Williams, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and Cody Williams of the Utah Jazz.
Prior to his time with the Pumas, Curtis was an assistant coach for the boys’ varsity team at Corona del Sol, where he mentored the school’s all-time leading scorer and former BYU men's basketball All-American, Alex Barcello.
