Incoming freshman Kihei Akina also played in this event but missed the cut on Friday. Akina’s summer play will continue as he will join senior Tyson Shelley and junior Peter Kim at the U.S. Amateur this month. They will tee it up on August 11 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, California.
BYU alumni finish top-25 at Korn Ferry Utah Championship

OGDEN, Utah – Daniel Summerhays, Peter Kuest and Cole Ponich each finished tied for 22nd on Sunday evening at Ogden Golf and Country Club.
The most veteran BYU alumnus, Summerhays, secured a T-22 finish in his 182nd career Korn Ferry event. After starting Saturday 8-under par, he completed round three by shooting a 4-under 66 with birdies on three, five, six, nine, 12 and 14. Summerhays began the final day by ripping off birdies on one, three and five to get himself to 15-under overall. Although he made another birdie on 17, the 41-year-old finished even par for the round and 12-under overall with the other Cougar alumni.
2025 BYU graduate Cole Ponich finished tied with Summerhays at 22nd on the leaderboard. He stayed consistent throughout the tournament, shooting no higher than 68 and no lower than 66 in each round. Ponich’s Saturday consisted of three birdies on three, 12 and 14 for a 2-under 68 on his scorecard. The 2025 Provo Open champion posted a 3-under 67 for the second time in this event on Sunday while carding five birdies at the third, fourth, sixth, 10th and 16th holes on day four.
Ponich’s freshman-year teammate Peter Kuest climbed up 39 spots in the last 36 holes to tie for 22nd place alongside Summerhays and Ponich. Going into Saturday, Kuest sat right on the cut line at 3-under par before catapulting himself up nine places on Saturday and 30 additional places on Sunday. Round three saw the former Second Team All-American shoot 3-under with birdies on five, 10, 13 and 15. Kuest shot his best round of the week on Sunday with a 6-under 64, courtesy of four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 15th, his second eagle of the tournament.
