LOS ANGELES — The BYU dive team saw two top-five finishes on the opening day of the USC Invitational.
“An amazing first day with two lifetime bests for Marti [Llop] and two personal bests for Ashton [Sparks],” head diving coach Tyce Routson said. “We are putting some flash together on some high-scoring dives, and our consistency has progressed to the next level. Proud of Sophia [DeVergh] and Brooklyn [Goeckeritz] making finals and seeing improvement against some tough competition.”
Men’s Recap
Martí Llop led the Cougars for the third meet in a row with a third-place finish in the 3-meter event. Llop put together a 350.65-point performance in the prelims and 379.70 in the finals, his two personal bests. Llop also totaled 18.00 on his degree of difficulty for his dives.
Freshman Ashton Sparks also saw two personal bests in the prelim and final events. He racked up a score of 306.25 in the preliminary event as well as 307.30 in the finals. His degree of difficulty totaled 18.50.
The pair will continue on Friday for day two of the USC Invitational in the platform events.
Women’s Recap
Brooklyn Goeckeritz completed her day with a fifth-place finish in the 1-meter event. In the prelims, Goeckeritz totaled 250.45 and finished the finals with a score of 281.40 alongside her degree of difficulty of 14.40.
Senior Sophia DeBergh placed 11th after solid performances in both prelims and finals. DeBergh scored 236.50 in the prelims and 245.90 in the finals. She totaled a degree of difficulty of 13.80.
Both will compete in Friday’s 3-meter competition on day two of the meet.
