PROVO, Utah — Sydney Benally dished nine assists and Lara Rohkohl scored a season-high 18 points as BYU women's basketball defeated Weber State 79-62 on Saturday to improve to 6-0 on the season.

The Cougars shot 46 percent from the field, outscored the Wildcats 29-13 in bench points and held Weber State to 18 percent from three.

After trailing briefly in the first half, BYU settled in behind balanced scoring and interior pressure to take a 38-35 halftime lead. The Cougars took full control in the third quarter as Rohkohl powered a decisive stretch, scoring 13 of her 18 points in the period.

“It was kind of a tale of two halves,” head coach Lee Cummard said. “In the first half, our toughness was in question. They beat us to loose balls and controlled the glass. That flipped in the second half. We played a lot more connected on both sides of the ball and looked more like us. There is still cleanup work to do, but I’m really glad they made that switch at halftime.”

Rohkohl finished with 18 points, five rebounds, two steals and a block, going 7-for-11 from the floor. Benally added nine points and four rebounds to go with her nine assists. Junior Marya Hudgins scored 11 points, going 6-for-6 at the line while also grabbing five rebounds and recording a block. Brinley Cannon contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Arielle Mackey-Williams added 11 points, three rebounds and three assists off the bench and recorded a plus-minus of 30. Braeden Gunlock chipped in five points and four rebounds, including a fourth-quarter three. Senior Hattie Ogden chipped in six points on two triples.

BYU was efficient at the charity stripe, finishing 22-of-27, its highest free-throw percentage of the season.

First Quarter

Weber State opened the game with two free throws and added a layup to take an early 4-0 lead before Marya Hudgins put BYU on the board with two makes at the line. Mackey-Williams knocked down a quick-release 3-pointer off a pass from Brinley Cannon, but the Wildcats answered with a triple of their own as the teams traded scores to a 7-7 tie with six minutes left in the quarter.

Hudgins continued her aggressive start, converting two more free throws and later scoring on a drive to the right side of the lane to put BYU in front 14-13. Weber State answered with a corner three after turnovers on both ends, and the Cougars tied it at 16 on an and-one finish from Bolanle Yussuf. The Wildcats closed the quarter with another three, taking a 19-16 lead into the second.

Second Quarter

After a pair of Mackey-Williams free throws, Cannon knocked down a catch-and-shoot three off a no-look pass from Benally to give BYU a 21-19 lead. With just over six minutes remaining, Hamlin drove the baseline and found Hattie Ogden for a corner three, and Cannon added a pull-up triple to push the margin to 29-24. Weber State answered with a layup, but Ogden banked in a three off a feed from Mackey-Williams to extend the advantage.

Weber State responded with a putback layup and a fadeaway jumper that sparked an 8-0 run to retake a 34-33 lead. Hudgins stopped the surge with two free throws, and Mackey-Williams added two more at the line in the final minute to send the Cougars into halftime ahead 38-35. Mackey-Williams led all scorers with 11 points through two quarters of play.

Third Quarter

BYU opened the second half with steady momentum as Benally sank two free throws before Mackey-Williams set up Rohkohl on the right block for an and-one. Rohkohl stayed dominant inside, scoring twice more off Benally feeds as the freshman recorded her fourth assist of the afternoon. Cannon then pushed the pace and found Hudgins for a corner three that widened the Cougars’ advantage. That was followed by another strong finish from Rohkohl and a coast-to-coast layup from Cannon that fueled a 6-0 BYU burst.

Rohkohl nailed two more free throws before Weber State countered with a 5-0 run to regain momentum. BYU responded as Benally and Rohkohl connected once again on a pick-and-roll, and a second-chance finish gave Rohkohl her 13th point of the quarter. The Cougars controlled the final minutes with stops on the defensive end and another inside score from Rohkohl to maintain a seven-point lead going into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter

BYU opened the fourth quarter with Benally blocking a Wildcat three, and Rohkohl adding a free throw to push the lead to 62-54. Gunlock extended the margin with a pair of second-chance free throws before Mackey-Williams found Benally for her first three of the afternoon. Gunlock then knocked down a triple of her own to make it 70-56.
