FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas — The Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation today announced BYU offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Aaron Roderick as a candidate for the 2025 Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coach.

Roderick, who was named BYU’s offensive coordinator in 2021, has helped lead the No. 11 ranked Cougars to a 10-1 start and a tie for first place in the Big 12 Conference. The BYU offense is currently No 17 nationally in ESPN's efficiency index, No. 22 nationally in rushing of rushing yards per game (201.4) and No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference, as well as No. 19 nationally in rushing touchdowns (27).

The Cougars are averaging 33.4 points per game and tied for the lead the Big 12 in the fewest turnovers with only 10 in 2025.

This year, Roderick has tutored true freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier to the best start of any freshman quarterback in BYU history. Through 11 games Bachmeier is 187-of-297 for 2,304 yards and 13 passing touchdowns, with just four interceptions. He is averaging 209.4 yards per game passing and is second on the team in rushing with 525 yards for an average of 47.7 yards per game.

Bachmeier’s 11 rushing touchdowns, broke a BYU season record for rushing scores by a quarterback held by Steve Young, Taysom Hill and Zach Wilson. Bachmeier has recorded at least one rushing touchdown in nine of BYU’s 11 games. He also has seven games with both a passing and rushing touchdown, the second highest total in BYU history only behind All-American QB Virgil Carter who accomplished the feat in eight games back in 1966.

In addition to Bachmeier, Roderick has established a balanced offensive attack behind the consistent rushing of junior running back LJ Martin

A candidate for the Doak Walker Award, Martin currently leads the Big 12 in carries (195) rushing yards (1,134) and yards per game (103.9) and is second in all-purpose yards (120.3). He is seventh in the nation in rushing yards, eighth in all-purpose yards and ninth in rushing yards per game.

Martin has been named Earl Campbell-Rose Award National Player of the Week honorable mention three times in 2025. He was also honored as the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 24 for his performance in helping No. 11 BYU to a 26-14 win at Cincinnati.

Roderick is in his seventh year with BYU and his 26th season as collegiate coach. Since arriving at BYU in 2018, he has mentored three NFL quarterbacks including Zach Wilson, the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Jaren Hall and Kedon Slovis, along with two wide receivers in Dax Milne and All Pro Puka Nakua. In addition, two running backs, Tyler Allgeier and Chris Brooks, as well as four BYU left tackles, Brady Christensen, Blake Freeland, Kingsley Suamataia and Caleb Eitienne have all advanced to the NFL.

Since its founding in 1996, the Broyles Award has honored 29 winners and more than 100 finalists, including some of the biggest names in college football coaching history. The 63 candidates for the 2025 award were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country.

The 2025 Broyles Award winner will be announced live at the 30th Annual Broyles Award Ceremony on Feb. 12, 2026, at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
