LAS VEGAS — BYU claimed its second regular-season victory against the UNLV Rebels in Las Vegas Friday night.
The men’s team saw three all-time top-10 finishes, 12 first-place finishes across 16 events and ended with a 182-117 victory. Friday’s performance marks consecutive wins against the UNLV Rebels.
Swimming
BYU started things off in the pool with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Bryce Broadhead, Peter Etzold, Max Kleinman and Josh Reed of the BYU A relay team finished their event at 3:11.06.
Following that race, the first individual event, the 1,000 freestyle, took place with Easton Mousser and Darwin Anderson placing in first and second. Mousser, a sophomore, hit the wall at 9:11.45, the second-fastest 1,000 freestyle time in BYU history. Mouser would later finish in first place in the 500 freestyle as well. Anderson also improved on his personal best in the 1,000 and moved into third all-time.
Over the next several events, the Cougars saw first-place finishes from Tanner Nelson, Etzold, and Mattia Reina. Reina took the top spot in the 200 butterfly at 1:45.39, the third-fastest time in program history.
BYU later saw two first-place finishes from senior Tyler Edlefsen in the 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley. He finished the 200 breaststroke at 1:58.47 and the 400 individual medley at 3:52.79 while competing in his Las Vegas hometown.
The men’s team finished the swimming portion of the meet strongly, with the A team — composed of Payton Plumb, Tanner Edwards, Reed and Kleinman — earning a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay.
Diving
BYU kicked off the meet strong with a first-place performance from Martí Llop in the 3-meter event. Llop tallied a score of 321.53, nearly 20 points ahead of the second-place finisher from UNLV. Llop would also claim a first place finish in the 1-meter event with a score of 318.98. Sparks and Baker placed in the event as well, ending in fifth and sixth.
