FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas — The Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation today announced BYU offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Aaron Roderick has been named a semifinalist for the 2025 Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coach.
Roderick, who was named BYU’s offensive coordinator in 2021, has helped lead the No. 11 ranked Cougars to an 11-1 record and a trip to the Big 12 Championship game in Dallas on Saturday, Dec. 6.
The BYU offense is currently No. 16 nationally in ESPN's efficiency index, No. 23 nationally in rushing yards per game (194.5) and No. 2 in the Big 12, as well as No. 15 nationally in rushing touchdowns (30). The Cougars are third in the conference in scoring offense, averaging 34 points per game and leading the Big 12 in the fewest turnovers with 10 in 2025.
This year, Roderick has tutored true freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier to the best start of any freshman quarterback in BYU history. The 6-2, 230-pound true freshman quarterback from Murrieta, California, finished the 12-game regular season completing 208-of-322 passes (65 percent) for 2,593 yards and 14 touchdowns with just four interceptions.
He averaged 216.1 yards per game passing, with an efficiency rating of 144.1. In addition, Bachmeier is second on the team in rushing, with 137 carries for 529 yards (3.9 yards per carry) and an average of 44.1 yards per game.
On Nov. 17, the Davey O’Brien Foundation named Bachmeier one of 20 semifinalists for the Davey O'Brien Award. He has been named to the Davey O'Brien Award's Great 8 list twice during the 2025 season and was named Big 12 Freshman Player of the Week seven times.
Bachmeier’s 11 rushing touchdowns, broke a BYU single-season record for rushing scores by a quarterback held by Steve Young, Taysom Hill and Zach Wilson. Bachmeier has recorded at least one rushing touchdown in nine of BYU’s 11 games. He also has seven games with both a passing and rushing touchdown, the second highest total in BYU history only behind All-American QB Virgil Carter who accomplished the feat in eight games back in 1966.
In addition to Bachmeier, Roderick has established a balanced offensive attack behind the consistent rushing of junior running back LJ Martin.
A candidate for the Doak Walker Award and the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, Martin wrapped up the 2025 regular season as the Big 12 statistical leader in rushing yards (1,229), yards per game (102.4) and all-purpose yards (1,453). He was also second in rushing touchdowns (11). Nationally, Martin is 10th in all-purpose yards, 12th in rushing yards and 14th rushing yards per game.
Martin has been named Earl Campbell-Rose Award National Player of the Week honorable mention four times in 2025. He was also honored as the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 24 for his performance in helping No. 11 BYU to a 26-14 win at Cincinnati.
Roderick is in his seventh year with BYU and his 26th season as collegiate coach. Since arriving at BYU in 2018, he has mentored three NFL quarterbacks including Zach Wilson, the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Jaren Hall and Kedon Slovis, along with two wide receivers in Dax Milne and All Pro Puka Nakua. In addition, two running backs, Tyler Allgeier and Chris Brooks, as well as four BYU left tackles, Brady Christensen, Blake Freeland, Kingsley Suamataia and Caleb Eitienne have all advanced to the NFL.
Since its founding in 1996, the Broyles Award has honored 29 winners and more than 100 finalists, including some of the biggest names in college football coaching history. The 63 candidates for the 2025 award were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country.
The 2025 Broyles Award winner will be announced live at the 30th Annual Broyles Award Ceremony on Feb. 12, 2026, at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
