ST. GEORGE, Utah — The BYU Cougars open the spring dual season Saturday with a road doubleheader against the Utah Tech Trailblazers in St. George, Utah.
BYU and Utah Tech will meet twice on Saturday, Jan. 17, with the first match scheduled for 11 a.m. MST and the second set for 3 p.m. MST. The contests mark BYU’s first dual matches of the spring following a fall schedule that featured ITA regional and sectional events.
The Cougars have controlled the all-time series, holding a 4-0 advantage over the Trailblazers. BYU has outscored Utah Tech 24-2 across the four meetings, including a 6-1 victory in the most recent matchup on Jan. 16, 2025, in Provo. Saturday’s doubleheader will be the first time the teams meet in St. George.
BYU brings a veteran core into the weekend, led by senior Kendall Kovick, the lone senior on the roster. The Cougars also return key contributors Chelsea Bluestein, Gracie Levelston and Sue Yan Tan, providing experience across both singles and doubles lineups as BYU looks to establish rhythm early in the dual season.
Utah Tech features a roster with multiple returners who will look to challenge BYU on home courts. Seniors Nicole Kells and Raquel Roshak provide leadership for the Trailblazers, while juniors Olivia Bustos, Ana Gutierrez Sampere and Mariana Zurita Berdecio add experience throughout the lineup. Sophomores Nutsa Tsintsadze and Maya Inouye round out a group aiming to capitalize on the demands of a two-match day.
Playing twice in one day will test depth and endurance for both teams, with doubles play expected to play a key role in setting early momentum. The doubleheader also serves as an important tune-up for BYU ahead of an upcoming road stretch that includes trips to San Diego, Boise and Memphis before the start of Big 12 Conference play.
